AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen College women's track and field team closed out its 2017 outdoor season here today by taking part in the Cardinal Last Chance Meet hosted by St. John Fisher College.
Sophomore sprinter Sydney McDonough (Alfred Station, N.Y./Alfred-Almond Central) posted a school-record in the 400 meter dash for the second-straight meet, as she placed first out of three entrants with a time of 58.92. McDonough became the first Daemen runner to run a sub-one-minute time in the event two weeks ago at the University at Buffalo Invitational with a time of 59.32. McDonough finished just ahead of teammate Tiffany Cycon (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster), who narrowly missed breaking the one minute barrier with a time of 1.00:25.
Additional highlights during track events included a second place showing by sophomore Sam Carro (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 15.91, and a solid effort in the 4x400-meter relay. Daemen's team of McDonough, Cycon and fellow sophomores Kyra Kress (Wayland, N.Y./Alfred-Almond) and Carrie Akin (Akron, N.Y./Akron) ran unopposed and posted a time of 4.19.33—just 10 seconds off the school-record time.
Freshman Taylor Haude (Rochester, N.Y./Hilton) came close to breaking the pole vault record (3.05 meters) she set two weeks ago at the UB Invitational, as she cleared 3.03 meters to finish seventh in the event. Haude also placed sixth in the javelin (24.24 meters), while freshman Hannah Miller (Seneca Falls, N.Y./Mynderse) had busy day—competing in the shot put, discus and hammer throw.
Senior standout Mackenzie Donahue (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora) did not take part in today's meet. She entered the weekend ranked 13th in the country for the 10,000-meter run, putting herself in contention for an invitation to compete at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships which will take place May 25-27 in Bradenton, Fla. Invitations will be announced this week.
