Women's Tennis Posts 5 Singles Wins On Opening Day Of Daemen Invitational

DAEMEN INVITATIONAL TOURNAMENT - DAY 1 RESULTS

AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen College women's tennis team saw five of its players advance past the quarterfinal round of their respective draws on the opening day of competition at the Daemen Invitational Tournament held late into this evening at the Ellicott Tennis Courts. The tournament features eight competing teams - Daemen, Roberts Wesleyan College, Millersville University, Clarion University, Niagara University, Colgate University, Allegheny College and Rochester Institute of Technology - and it runs through this Sunday, Sept. 17.

All matches today came in one of the tournament's seven draws for singles play. Singles draws were color coded as follows: red (No. 1), orange (No. 2), yellow, (No. 3), green (No. 4), blue (No. 5), indigo (No. 6) and violet (No. 6+).

Veterans Gretchen Ringler (North Tonawanda, N.Y.), Jessica Robins (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) and Morgan Park (Hamburg, N.Y.) all picked up wins in their respective quarterfinal round matches today, as did freshmen Giovanna Paschoalin (Sao Caetano Do Sul, Brazil) and Christina Stasiuk (Bowmansville, N.Y.).

Paschoalin emerged as the victor from a marathon quarterfinal match in the orange draw vs. RIT's Shayna Ginster. The match last over two-and-a-half hours with the Daemen greenhorn scoring a 7-6, 4-6, 1-0 victory. She will face Colgate's MacKenzie Deeter in the orange draw semifinals Saturday. Deeter cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Clarion's Maria Snyder.

In the yellow draw, it was Ringler, Daemen's lone senior, cruising to a 6-2, 6-0 defeat of Clarion's Vinisha Reddy. Ringler faces Colgate's Lauren O'Brien in the semifinals Saturday. O'Brien didn't drop a game (6-0, 6-0) in defeating Allegheny's Sarah Casey.

Stasiuk advanced in the green draw with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Allegheny's Miharu Koh. She'll face Niagara' Ali Hutchinson in Saturday's semifinal. Hutchinson advanced with a 6-2, 6-1 defeat of Millersville's Kelley Hershey.

Robins picked up a 6-1, 6-3 win over Millersville's Haley Nauman in the blue draw. She next faces Colgate's Kelly Klein who ousted Allegheny's Lauren Fugate 6-2, 6-2.

Lastly, in the indigo draw, Daemen's Park scored a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Niagara's Jasmin Vargas. She'll face RIT's Kristen Zablonski who upset Clarion's Michelle Petrilla in straight sets (6-0, 6-1).

Tournament play resumes Saturday at 10 a.m.
