FLUSHING, N.Y. - Freshman Lorissa Yuen (Portland, Ore.) earned a trio of victories to pace the Daemen College women's tennis team over the last two days at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Region Championship tournament being held at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

As tournament play got underway Friday, Yuen made it through the tournament's qualifying draw with a pair of wins. She defeated Megan Scali of Molloy College without dropping a game (8-0) in the opening round, and went on to earn an 8-2 victory over Sara O'Brien of St. Thomas Aquinas College. The second qualifying draw victory advanced the Daemen freshman into the main singles draw.

In her main draw opening round match, Yuen downed Karen Serina of Adelphi University, 6-4, 6-4. Her run came to an end though in the next round, falling to Dominika Hadnadova, 7-5, 6-1. Hadnadova of the University of the District of Columbia, is the tournament's No. 6 seed.

Yuen is now 6-5 in singles play this season, tied for the team lead in singles wins with classmate Christina Stasiuk (Bowmansville, N.Y.). Stasiuk earned her sixth win of the season in the first round of the qualifying draw over Southern New Hampshire University's Catherine LaChance (8-1). Stasiuk's bid to advance to the main singles draw was halted by Paula Avelllan of UDC (8-4).

Freshman Giovanna Paschoalin (Sao Caetano Do Sul, Brazil) also advanced into the second round of the qualifying draw after securing an 8-0 defeat of Anna Ristova of St. Thomas Aquinas College. Merrimack College's Lauren Persson was an 8-2 winner over Paschoalin in the match to advance to the main draw.

Senior Gretchen Ringler (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) and juniors Jessica Robins (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) and Morgan Park (Hamburg, N.Y.) also participated in Friday's qualifying draw for singles, but none could advance past their first match.

In the main doubles draw, Daemen went 2-3 overall. Greenhorns Paschoalin and Yuen teamed up for an 8-5 defeat of Molloy's Montaine LeGupil-Maier and Amanda Gaimaro, but the Daemen duo was ousted by Alma Garcia Valle and Manuela Cornejo of Goldey-Beacom College. Veterans Ringler and Robins also advanced into the second round with an 8-1 defeat of Molloy's Samantha Bloecker and Christie Catterson, but that's as far as they would get after suffering a defeat to SNHU's Sofia Morais and Anna Sala. Park and Stasiuk fell in their opening round match to Carleyah Mclean and Meritxell Jimeno Vicente of American International College.

Daemen returns to dual-match play with an East Coast Conference tilt vs. UDC Friday, Sept. 29.
