REDHAWK INVITATIONAL — FULL RESULTS
ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Daemen College men's golf team took part in the Redhawk Invitational this past weekend. The two-day tournament was hosted by Roberts Wesleyan College and took place at the par-72 Ridgemont Country Club. Daemen placed fifth out of the five schools entered.
Host Roberts Wesleyan claimed the team championship with a score of 589 (+13). Mercyhurst University placed second with a 602 (+26), just ahead of The College of Saint Rose (605/+29). The RWC "B" team placed fourth (631/+55), followed by Daemen (649/+73). Senior Brandon Grzywacz of RWC shot a four-under-par 68 during the opening round on Sunday and claimed individual medalist honors with a two-day score of 138 (-6).
Daemen was paced by freshman Kevin Halpern (East Amherst, N.Y.) and senior Ryan Gibbons (Amherst, N.Y.).
Halpern, a product of Williamsville North High School, fired an even-par 72 during the opening round on Sunday and followed up with a one-under-par 71 Monday. His two-day score of 143 (-1) was good for second place out of 25 golfers. He was -3 over the final 12 holes on Monday and finished the tournament with 24 pars and seven birdies. It marks the first two times in his brief collegiate career that Halpern has posted a round in the 70's.
Halpern also becomes the first Daemen golfer to finish a two-day tournament under par since Kyle Kapturowski tied for first place at the 2010 Colgate University Invitational with a 143 (-1).
Not to be overlooked, Gibbons placed third overall with a two-day score of 147. He equaled his career-low score of 73 (+1) during the opening round and followed up with a 74 on Monday. His two-day score of 147 (+3) is the lowest of his four-year career. Gibbons has now posted a score in the 70's 19 times over his career. He finished with six birdies and 22 pars for the tournament.
Senior Tyler Hockenberger (Greece, N.Y.) carded a career-low 77 during the second round on Monday and finished tied for 21st with a two-day score of 160 (+16). Freshman Drew Vincek (Orchard Park, N.Y.) also competed for the Wildcats and placed 25th with a two-day score of 199.
The Wildcats close out the fall portion of their 2018-19 schedule this weekend (Oct. 19-20) when they head to Manlius, N.Y. to take part in the Le Moyne College Fall Invitation.
