Women's Track & Field 2/10/2018 3:38:00 PM Lea Sobieraski Athletic Communications Graduate Assistant Wildcat Women Fare Well at Highlander Invitational HOUGHTON, N.Y. – For the second time in as many months, the Daemen College women's indoor track and field team took part in the Highlander Invitational hosted by Houghton College at the Kerr-Pegula Fieldhouse today, establishing two new school records. Junior Sam Carro (Canandaigua, N.Y.) broke her own school record in the 60-meter hurdles, with a preliminary time of 9.47 seconds. She bested her previous mark of 9.58 seconds, which she established at the 2017 East Coast Conference Championships. She went on to finish second in the 60-meter hurdle finals with a time of 9.51 seconds. Freshman standout Katja Meyer (Verona, N.Y.) added another record in her stellar rookie season, setting a team record for the third consecutive meet. Meyer has set new marks in the triple jump, long jump and added the high jump to her list of accomplishments. She placed fifth in the high jump with a leap of 1.48 meters, besting the previous mark of 1.40 meter set by Callie O'Conner in February 2014. Additionally, Meyer added a sixth-place finish in the triple jump (9.96 meters) and placed ninth in the long jump (4.55 meters). Senior Brittany Denton (Oakfield, N.Y.) topped the field of 13 participants in the 1-mile run, crossing the finish line in 5:21.37, while teammate Rebekah Zee (East Aurora, N.Y.) placed third in the event with a time of 5:51.83. Later, Denton went on to finish fourth out of 33 entrants in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:28.09, while rookie star Savannah Warner (Elma, N.Y.) placed ahead of Denton in second place. Warner completed the race in 2:26.74, just three seconds shy of the leader. In the 400-meter dash, Daemen had four finishers in the top ten: Sydney McDonough (Alfred Station, N.Y.), Tiffany Cycon (Lancaster, N.Y.), Danielle Juby (Ilion, N.Y.), and Kyra Kress (Wayland, N.Y.). McDonough paced the Wildcats finishing third with a time of 1:02.16, while Cycon placed fifth (1:02.80), Juby finished ninth (1:03.86), and Kress placed tenth (1:03.86). In field events, thrower Hannah Miller (Seneca Falls, N.Y.) had a solid showing for DC. The sophomore finished second in the weight throw with a heave of 12.32 meters and added a sixth-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 9.47 meters. Freshman thrower Cayleigh Scia (Lancaster, N.Y.) finished third in the weight throw (11.83 meters). In the pole vault, Taylor Haude (Rochester, N.Y.) continued to be a top performer, finishing second (3.05 meters). With a clear of 3.05 meters, Haude tied her career-best and school record once again. The Wildcats return to The College at Brockport for the second Brockport Golden Eagle Invitational of the indoor season which is set for Saturday, Feb. 17th at the Special Events & Recreation Center.
