Women's Track & Field 2/17/2018 7:21:00 PM Lea Sobieraski Athletic Communications Graduate Assistant Wildcat Women Finish Fifth At Golden Eagle Invitational BROCKPORT, N.Y. –One first place finish and six top-five finishes helped the Daemen College women's indoor track and field team finish fifth in the team standings at the Brockport Golden Eagle Invitational today. The Wildcats finished with 55 points, just six points behind fourth-place Oswego. Host Brockport claimed the team championship with 153 points. Geneseo (151), RPI (68), Oswego (61) and Daemen rounded out the top five. A total of 12 schools took part in the event. The Daemen 4x400 relay quartet of Tiffany Cycon (Lancaster, N.Y.), Kyra Kress (Wayland, N.Y.), Savannah Warner (Elma, N.Y.), and Sydney McDonough (Alfred Station, N.Y.) claimed first place with a time of 4:20.05, good for 10 points for the Wildcats. Senior Brittany Denton (Oakfield, N.Y.) finished second in both the 1-mile and 800-meter race, earning 16 points for the Wildcats. In the mile, she crossed the finish line in 5:16.72 good for second place out of 28 entrants. The middle-distance standout followed up with a time of 2:25.82 in the 800m. Warner, a freshman star, added a fifth-place finish behind Denton in the 800m, finishing the event in 2:26.48. Additional top-five finishes went to senior Sam Carro (Canandaigua, N.Y.), McDonough, and Kress. Carro placed second in the 60m hurdle finals with a time of 9.57 (8 points) seconds after winning the preliminary heat in 9.59 seconds. In the 500-meter dash, McDonough finished third out of a field of 11 participants with a time of 1:21.14 (6 points), while Kress posted a time of 1:22.65 (4 points) in the 500m to finish fifth. Cycon, Ashley Dusza (Alden, N.Y.), and Carrie Akin (Akron, N.Y.) rounded out the Daemen scoring. Cycon, a junior sprinter, claimed 3 points after finishing seventh in the 400m (1:02.19, 2 points) and eighth in the 200m (27.06 seconds, 1 point). Dusza and Akin finished seventh and eighth in the 500m respectively, totaling 3 points towards the team standings. In field events, sophomore Taylor Haude (Rochester, N.Y.) set a new school record in the pole vault; she cleared 3.21 meters besting her own benchmark of 3.05 meters, to finish eighth out of 21 entrants. The Wildcats conclude their indoor campaign next weekend when they travel to Staten Island to compete in the East Coast Conference Championships slated for Friday, February 23.
