Wildcat Women Place Fifth At ECC Indoor Championships

Denton & Haude Take Home Top ECC Championship Honors

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Daemen College women's track and field team closed out its 2018 indoor season today, competing at the East Coast Conference Championship held at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.  The Wildcats finished fifth in team standings out of nine teams, compiling 62 points.  Roberts Wesleyan accumulated 147 points to win the conference championships.

Daemen was paced by senior Brittany Denton (Oakfield, N.Y.) who took home first and second place in her respective events.  The middle distance specialist placed second in the 1-mile out of 13 entrants to start the night off; running the event in 5:20.36.  She followed it up with a first-place showing in the 1,000-meter, crossing the finish line in 5:20.36.  Denton's 18 points earned was the highest out of the Daemen squad.
Sophomore pole-vault extraordinaire Taylor Haude (Rochester, N.Y.) was the only other Wildcat woman to earn an ECC Championship title.  Haude eclipsed her own school record for the second consecutive week, clearing 3.26 meters on her third and final attempt.  Teammate Kyra Kress (Wayland, N.Y.) finished second after clearing 3.05 meters.  The dynamic duo collected 18 points for DC.  Kress also added a seventh-place finish in the 500-meter dash with a time of 1:21.95.

Also in the record-setting mood, today was rookie Savannah Warner (Elma, N.Y.).  Warner, a long distance standout, ran a record-breaking 2:20.48 in the 800-meter to place fourth.  She bested the previous record of 2:21.66 held by one of Daemen's all-time great, Mackenzie Donahue.

Additional highlights during the track events included a fourth-place showing from Rebekah Zee (East Aurora, N.Y.) in the 1,000m (3:14.10, 4 points), a fifth-place finish by Sam Carro (Canandaigua, N.Y.) in the 60-meter hurdles (9.51 seconds, 2 points) and an eighth-place finish by Tiffany Cycon (Lancaster, N.Y.) in the 400-meter dash (1:01.88).

In relay action, Daemen's distance medley quartet of Shania LiVecchi (West Seneca, N.Y), Katie Wright (Kent, N.Y.), Ashley Dusza (Alden, N.Y.) and Zee earned 8 points for the Wildcats, finishing second with a time of 13:32.55.

In field events, rookie Cayleigh Scia (Lancaster, N.Y.) had a stellar ECC Championships debut.  The WNY native placed third in the weight throw with a heave of 12.62 meters, giving Daemen 6 points.  Katja Meyer (Verona, N.Y.) finished sixth in the high jump (1.45 meters) with 1 point to round out the Daemen scoring.

Daemen resumes its 2018 schedule when the outdoor portion of the schedule gets underway with the Geneseo Early Spring Invitational on Saturday, March 31.
