Women's Track & Field Opens Outdoor Campaign At Geneseo

GENESEO, N.Y. - Sprinters Sydney McDonough (Alfred Station, N.Y.) and Tiffany Cycon (Lancaster, N.Y.), and middle distance specialists Brittany Denton (Oakfield, N.Y.) and Savannah Warner (Elma, N.Y.) each posted top-10 finishes to pace the Daemen College women's track and field team in their 2018 outdoor season opener today at the Geneseo Invitational.

McDonough and Cycon recorded the highest finishes of the day, finishing second and third, respectively, in the 400-meter dash. McDonough edged out her teammate, crossing the finish line in 1:01.54, just two seconds shy of her own school record time (59.32) in the event. Cycon was hot on her heels, finishing in 1:01.78. Cycon went on to add a 10th place finish in the 200-meter dash, besting her own team record in the event by finishing in 26.17 seconds. She had previously set the benchmark (26.33 seconds) at this same meet last season.

Denton and Warner each registered fourth-place finishes, Denton in the 1500-meter run and Warner in the 800-meter run. Denton crossed the finish line in 4:52.94, four seconds off the team-record pace of former standout Mackenzie Donahue (4:48.52 at the Westminster Invitational on April 16, 2016). Warner, a freshman making her outdoor collegiate debut, ran the shorter 800-meter race in 2:23.33, six seconds back of Hannah Rice's team record (2:17.00 at the Bob Kahn Invite on April 4, 2015).

Junior Kyra Kress (Wayland, N.Y.) also stood out for the Wildcats today, finishing fifth in the 400-meter hurdles (1:09.95) and 11th in the pole vault (2.92 meters). Fellow pole-vaulter Taylor Haude (Rochester, N.Y.) also cleared 2.92 meters today, and finished 12th.

Junior Sam Carro (Canandaigua, N.Y.) posted a fourth-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles (16.77 seconds).

In throwing events, sophomore Hannah Miller (Seneca Falls, N.Y.) placed 11th in the hammer with a long toss of 36.45 meters, the best of her career thus far.

Daemen returns to action next weekend (Saturday, April 7) at the Dave Labor Alumni Invitational hosted by Slippery Rock University.
