CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Daemen College women's outdoor track and field team participated in the Cortland Please Stop Snowing Invitational hosted by SUNY Cortland this evening. Daemen finished third out of eight competing teams with 88 points.
Host Cortland claimed the team title with a score of 157.5, while East Coast Conference rival Roberts Wesleyan placed second with 153 points.
Freshman Savannah Warner (Elma, N.Y.) claimed the individual title in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:32.23. She bested Veronica Kordrupel of Buffalo State by less than a second to earn the Wildcats 10 points for her first place showing. Daemen also got second-place showings by juniors
Sam Carro (Canandaigua, N.Y.) and
Kyra Kress (Wayland, N.Y.) in the 100-meter hurdles and 400-meters respectively. Carro placed second out of 10 participants in the shorter distance event with a time of 16.45 seconds. In the 400m hurdles, Kress eclipsed her own school-record, crossing the finish line in 1:07.11. She set the previous benchmark of 1:08.77 last April at the Roc City Classic.
Additional top-five finishes on the track went to
Sydney McDonough (Alfred Station, N.Y.),
Tiffany Cycon (Lancaster, N.Y.) and the 4x100 relay team of Carro, Cycon, Danielle Juby (Ilion, N.Y.) and
Rachel Roberson (Tonawanda, N.Y.). McDonough placed fourth out of 19 runners in the 400-meter run with a time of 1:00.01. Cycon finished third and fourth in the 200-meter (26.63 seconds) and 100-meter dash (12.76 seconds) respectively. The relay team finished third with a time of 52.17 seconds, garnering six points towards Daemen's team total.
Freshman Taya Mucha (Lockport, N.Y.) also turned in a solid effort in the 1500-meter run, as she placed eighth out of 16 entrants with a time of 5:31.91.
Freshman Katja Meyer (Verona, N.Y.) established a new school record once again. She posted a record jump of 1.47 meters in the high jump, finishing fifth overall. The previous mark of 1.45 meters was set by Alicia Palmatier on May 11, 2012. Meyer added another top-ten finish in the long jump, placing sixth out of 18 jumpers with a leap of 4.73 meters.
Also in the record setting mood today was sophomore Taylor Haude (Rochester, N.Y.). Haude claimed the individual title in the pole vault with a record-setting performance of 3.21 meters, besting her own previous benchmark of 3.05 meters. She also added a third place showing in the javelin throw with a heave of 25.48 meters.
Kyra Kress finished second in the pole vault behind Haude after clearing 3.06 meters. Freshman Betty Jones (Camillus, N.Y) turned in a strong performance in the hammer throw, finishing eighth with a throw of 29.61 meters.
Up next, the Wildcats return to action next Saturday when they host the East Coast Conference Championships on Saturday, April 21st, marking the first time that Daemen has hosted a track and field competition since the inception of the program in 2011. The meet will take place at the newly built multi-purpose turf field stadium at Williamsville South High School.
