Wildcat Women Give It Their All To Finish Second At ECC Championships

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. – In the last event of the day, the Daemen College women's track and field team outlasted LIU Post by six-tenths of a second in the 4x400 meter relay to take home second-place at the 2018 Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Today's meet marked the first-ever track meet hosted by Daemen since the inception of the program back in 2011; the event took place at the beautiful new stadium at Williamsville South High School.

Heading into the final race, Daemen and LIU Post were even at 92 points apiece, tied for second place behind the fifth-consecutive ECC Champions Roberts Wesleyan College.  As the last leg of the relay ensued, every Wildcat wearing their blue and white erupted with excitement as junior Sydney McDonough (Alfred Station, N.Y.) beat Talya Williams from Post by the slimmest of margins.  McDonough, ran a 58.012, nearly a whole second faster than her current Daemen record in the 400-meter (59.32 seconds).  Tiffany Cycon (Lancaster, N.Y.), Savannah Warner (Elma, N.Y.) and Kyra Kress (Wayland, N.Y.) along with McDonough established a new Wildcat record with a time of 4:08.65, besting the previous record of 4:09.54 set last April.

The Roberts Wesleyan Redhawks claimed the team championship for the fifth-straight year with 194 points.  The Wildcats accumulated 100 points to finish second, while the Pioneers of LIU Post placed third with 98 team points.

The Daemen women had a phenomenal day; three individuals claimed first-place in their respective events while many added top-five finishes to secure silver.

Freshman field standout Katja Meyer (Verona, N.Y.)  earned 12 points for her performances in the triple jump and high jump.  Meyer posted a record-breaking leap of 10.59 meters in the triple jump, topping the field of 10 entrants.  She smashed the previous record of 10.14 meters which was set back on April 26, 2014, by Ashley Krol, making it two consecutive weeks with benchmark-breaking performances.  Meyer also added a fifth-place finish in the high jump with a leap of 1.35 meters.

Veteran dignitary Amy Trabert (Amherst, N.Y.) had a stellar day in the 10,000-meter and 5,000-meter runs.  Trabert began with a first-place victory in the 10,000m with a time of 40:58.53, making it her second ECC Championship in this distance as she won the event in 2016.  This title also marks the third consecutive year that a Daemen female has been victorious, Mackenzie Donahue won the crown last season.  Trabert then placed third in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 19:00.98 earning the Wildcats six points.

Sophomore pole-vault specialist Taylor Haude (Hilton, N.Y.) was the final Wildcat to win their respective event.  Haude cleared 3.05 meters on her first attempt to earn the ECC Championship, which she also won during the indoor campaign back in February.  Haude also added a fifth-place finish in the javelin with a throw of 25.33 meters.

Warner, Cycon, McDonough, Brittany Denton (Oakfield, N.Y.) and Sam Carro (Canandaigua, N.Y.) all finished in the top-five of their event to earn the Wildcats points.  Warner placed second out of 22 runners in the 800-meter (2:21.37), Cycon finished seventh in both the 100m (12.92), and 200m dash (26.72) and McDonough ran a 1:00.05 in the 400-meter sprint to finish fourth.  Denton placed third in the 1500-meter with a time of 4:50.00 and followed it up with a fourth-place showing in the 5,000-meter (19:05.12).  In the 100-meter hurdles, Carro placed third with a time of 16.06 seconds.

In field events, sophomore thrower Hannah Miller (Seneca Falls, N.Y.) and junior Kyra Kress each placed third in their events.  Miller was dominant today, placing third in the hammer throw (37.36 meters) and fourth in the discus (29.11 meters).  In the pole vault, Kress cleared 3.05 meters on her final attempt to take home third place.

Up next, The Wildcats have a short turnaround as they gear up for the Alfred State Invitation this Monday, April 23rd.  Daemen will make the short trek to Alfred, N.Y. for the 4:00 p.m. start time.
