AMHERST, N.Y. – Daemen College head women's track & field coach Paul Lagno announced the signing of two athletes for the program's 2018 recruiting class today. The two signees – Ailish McDevitt (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville DeWitt) and Sophie Sheffer (Custom Park, N.Y./Shenedehowa) – are both freshmen-to-be, and will enroll in classes and join the track & field program beginning in the Fall 2018 semester.

McDevitt a five-foot-eight sprinter, jumper and hurdler comes to Daemen from the Syracuse area where she starred for the Jamesville-DeWitt Red Rams under head coach Mike Acchione. McDevitt earned seven varsity letters in track & field and two in soccer during her scholastic career. She earned first team all-league honors from the Onondaga High School League (OHSL) as member Jamesville-DeWitt's 4x200 meter relay team that won first place at the OHSL indoor championship meet. McDevitt helped the Red Rams capture seven league and sectional championships throughout career.

The daughter of Gerard and Connie McDevitt, Ailish was honored as a recipient of the Scholastic Silver Key Award in 2017. She plans to major in Physical Therapy at Daemen.

Sheffer, a five-foot-six pole vault specialist, hails from the Capital District but was born in nearby Rochester. Sheffer shined for the Shenendehowa Plainsmen under head coach Dennis Hogan earning two varsity letters on the track, while also lettering in varsity swimming for four years. Sheffer and the rest of the Shenendehowa squad claimed five sectional championships during her athletic career.

Off the track, Sheffer is a National Honor Society Member and a member of the Science Honor Society. She is the daughter of Eric and Marla Sheffer, and she plans to be a Physician Assistant major at Daemen.

The pair of signees will join a Daemen squad that placed fifth at the East Coast Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship meet in late February, and second at the ECC Outdoor Track and Field Championship meet in late April.
