MERCYHURST INVITATIONAL — FULL RESULTS
NORTH EAST, Pa. - The Daemen College men's golf team opened the 2018-19 season by taking part in the Mercyhurst Invitational this past weekend. The two-day tournament was hosted by Mercyhurst University and took place at the par-72 Lake View Country Club. Daemen, which has participated in this event in seven of the last eight years, placed 13th out of the 13 schools entered.
Humber College edged out the University of Indiana of Pennsylvania to claim the team championship. Humber posted a team score of 599 (+23), just two strokes ahead of IUP (601). Mercyhurst (605), West Chester University (615) and Penn State - Behrend (620) rounded out the top five. Freshman Adrian Larsen of Mercyhurst fired a five-under-par 67 during the opening round and claimed individual medalist honors with a two-day score of 140 (-4).
Daemen was paced by senior Tyler Hockenberger (Greece, N.Y.), who finished tied for 48th out of the field of 84 golfers. Hockenberger equaled his career-low score of 78 this morning during the second round and finished with a two-day score of 163 (85-78). He pared 11 of the 18 hoes during the second round. His 78 today marked the seventh time over 14 career rounds that he has posted a score in the 70's. Fellow senior Ryan Gibbons (Amherst, N.Y.) shot a team-best 83 during the opening round on Sunday and finished tied for 72nd with a 172 (83-89).
Freshmen Kevin Halpern (East Amherst, N.Y.) and Drew Vincek (Orchard Park, N.Y.) both made their collegiate debuts this weekend. Halpern, a product of Williamsville North High School, posted an 85 during the opening round and followed up with an 83 this morning. His two-day score of 168 tied him for 69th overall. Vincek, a graduate of Canisius High School, posted a two-day score of 216 and placed 84th.
The Wildcats are idle until Oct. 7-8 when they return to Erie, Pa. to take part in the Howard "Bud" Elwell Invitational hosted by Gannon University. Daemen will be making its fourth-straight appearance at this event.
