2019 NCAA EAST REGION CHAMPIONSHIPS - FULL RESULTS
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Daemen College women's cross country team closed out the 2019 season by placing 13th out of 23 schools at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II East Region Championship meet held today at Belmont Plateau. The 6K race is held to determine the region's three national championship-qualifying teams, as well as three national championship-qualifying individuals.
The East Region of NCAA Division II is comprised of teams affiliated with the East Coast Conference, the Northeast-10 Conference and the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference. Jefferson University of the CACC served as the regional host.
Perennial power Stonehill College claimed the regional title—its ninth championship over the past 11 years. The Skyhawks placed five runners among the Top-10 finishers and totaled 26 team points. Stonehill edged ECC champion Roberts Wesleyan College, which had three runners among the top-10 and totaled 41 points. Southern New Hampshire University placed third with 130 points. Stonehill, Roberts Wesleyan and SNHU all advance to take part in the 2019 NCAA Division II National Championships, set to take place Nov. 23 in Sacramento, Calif.
Junior Samantha Curtin of Stonehill paced the field of 162 runners with a time of 22:19.1. Curtin edged sophomore Ashley Corcoran of SNHU by just four seconds.
Freshman Katie Olding of American International Colege, junior Abagaile Kimbrell of St. Thomas Aquinas College and freshman Christine Toy of Saint Anselm College also earned a trip to the national championships as the top-three individuals from non-qualifying teams. Olding placed ninth (22:49.7), Kimbrell placed 11th (23:01.7) and Toy placed 13th (23:01.9).
HIGHLIGHTS
- Redshirt sophomore Kassandra Nolet (Fort Erie, Ont.) paced the seven Daemen runners who took part in today's race. Nolet placed 34th overall with a time of 23:59.2. It ranks as a personal-best time for a 6K race for Nolet, who earned second-team All-ECC honors after placing 13th at the ECC Championships two weeks ago. Her previous best time for a 6K race came during this year's season-opener when she posted a time of 24:37.0 at the Doug Watts Open hosted by Edinboro University. Nolet took nearly two minutes off her time of 25:43.40 she posted at the 2018 NCAA East Regional.
- Junior Savannah Warner (Elma, N.Y.) placed second among Daemen runners and 60th overall with a time of 24:42.5. It marked the best finish and the best time at an NCAA Regional for Warner, who placed 70th as a freshman (25:28.0) and 64th as a sophomore (25:00.40).
- Junior Taya Mucha (Lockport, N.Y.) and sophomore Sarah Golas (Alden, N.Y) also placed among the top-100 runners. Mucha posted a personal-best time of 25:16.8 for a 6K race and placed 79th. It marked the first time she has posted a time under 26 minutes for a 6K race. Golas placed 87th with a time of 25:26.7. She has now posted a time under 26 minutes in four of her five career 6K races.
- Senior Shania LiVecchi (West Seneca, N.Y.) also figured in the scoring for the Wildcats today, as she placed fifth among Daemen runners and 116th overall with a time of 26:34.4.
- Junior Mackenzie Tubbs (Elmira, N.Y.) and sophomore Mia Picciano (Auburn, N.Y.) and also competed for Daemen today. Tubbs finished 129th (27:52.7) and Picciano placed 152nd (31:10.6).
