AMHERST, N.Y. - Frida Rubio (San Diego, Calif.) of Daemen has been named the East Coast Conference Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week for matches played March 15-21. The official announcement came in the ECC's weekly sport report released this afternoon.
In her first collegiate match, Rubio led the Wildcats to a season-opening 7-0 victory over D'Youville this past Saturday evening at Miller Tennis Center. It marked the Wildcats' first competition in more than a calendar year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and the program's first victory in a season opener since the 2017-18 campaign.
Rubio teamed with senior Christina Stasiuk (Bowmansville, N.Y.) atop the Wildcats' doubles lineup to take down D'Youville's Julia Clapper and Faith Falkowski (6-0) without dropping a game. The Daemen freshman proceeded sweep DYC's Allison Meissner in the No. 1 singles position (6-0, 6-0).
Stasiuk, who was named to the ECC's weekly honor roll, also swept her No. 2 singles match against Clapper without dropping a game (6-0, 6-0). With 56 combined singles/doubles victories in her career, Stasiuk stands just one behind current assistant coach Karli Hollins for fourth on the program's all-time wins list.
Rubio becomes just the third Daemen player to garner ECC Rookie of the Week honors and the first since Lorissa Yuen after the opening week of the 2017-18 season.
Rubio, Stasiuk and the Wildcats (1-0, 1-0 ECC) return to action with their second ECC contest in as many weekends when hosting St. Thomas Aquinas this Saturday, March 27 at Miller Tennis Center (6:30 p.m.).
