Here's five things to know about upcoming matches for the Daemen women's tennis team...

1. The Daemen women's tennis team returns to action with a trio of contests in as many days this weekend, including two East Coast Conference contests. The Wildcats will clash with crosstown rival D'Youville on Friday evening. Although the match is being played at Miller Tennis Center, the indoor home of Daemen's tennis teams, it is considered D'Youville's home contest, therefore the D'Youville spectator policy applies. On Saturday, Daemen will get their first taste of outdoor competition as the Wildcats host preseason ECC favorite Queens at the Williamsville South High School courts. On Sunday, the Wildcats wrap up the weekend with a non-conference trip to Division III Fredonia.

2. Daemen has been idle since opening the season March 20 with a 7-0 victory over their opponent this Friday, D'Youville. It marked the team's first match in more than a calendar year and their first victory in a season opener since the 2017-18 campaign. Senior Christina Stasiuk, junior Courtney Otis, sophomores Hannah Pagano and Mackenzie Schayes and freshmen Frida Rubio and Kayla Nguyen all picked up wins in both singles and doubles play to help the Wildcats sweep the Saints. Rubio, who teamed with Stasiuk for a 6-0 win on the No. 1 doubles court, also swept her No. 1 singles match (6-0, 6-0) en route to earning ECC Rookie of the Week honors. She's just the third Daemen player to earn the weekly recognition since Daemen joined the conference in 2013. Stasiuk was named to the ECC weekly honor roll after increasing her career singles/doubles win total to 56 - one shy of current assistant coach Karli Hollins for fourth in program history.

3. D'Youville has also been idle since their March 20 loss to the Wildcats which was also their first match in more than a year. Both D'Youville and Daemen had scheduled matches vs. St. Thomas Aquinas postponed in late March due to COVID-19 protocols. The Saints are transitioning from NCAA Division III to Division II and are in their first season as members of the East Coast Conference. They return eight players from their 2019-20 team that finished 6-7 overall, and are led by interim head coach Maura McKenna-Rossow. Junior Lauren Karoglan headlines the team's returners. Karoglan posted a 9-2 singles record while appearing in D'Youville's No. 1 singles position in 2019-20. Junior Amanda Waliszewski (5-5 singles) and sophomore Faith Falkowski (6-5 singles) also return. After meeting just one time in the previous eight seasons, Friday's match is the second of four between the Wildcats and Saints this season.

4. Queens was the unanimous selection atop the ECC preseason poll after capturing the league title in the fall of 2019. The Knights made 18 consecutive appearances in the NCAA tournament before the competition was cancelled last season due to COVID-19. Head coach Alan Nagel is in his 39th season and has led the Knights to more than 500 victories. Queens' seven-player roster includes five returning players and five hailing from foreign countries (Sweden, Japan, Poland, Germany). Sophomore Maja Makal headlines the group after being named the ECC Preseason Player of the Year. Makal was named the ECC Rookie of the Year and an ITA All-American after posting a 14-6 singles record and a 9-3 doubles mark during the 2019-20 season. When they face Daemen on Saturday, the Knights will be competing for the first time in 402 days. They've won 19 consecutive ECC matches and are unbeaten (7-0) all-time against Daemen. They also enter the match tied for first (with Concordia-NY) in the Oracle/ITA East Region rankings and are receiving votes in the top 25 national poll.

5. The Fredonia Blue Devils are members of NCAA Division III and the State University of New York Athletic Conference. The Wildcats and Blue Devils will be meeting for the first time since a 7-2 Daemen victory on Sept. 9, 2014 (Fredonia leads the series 2-1). The Blue Devils, led by coach Dave Kinkela, return five players from their 2019-20 team that went 10-4 overall and 3-4 in SUNYAC play. Senior Sarah Bunk leads the Fredonia returners after earning All-SUNYAC second team honors last season when she went 11-3 in singles matches and 13-1 in doubles matches. Senior Taylor Marelli (8-3 singles, 9-2 doubles) also returns. The Blue Devils open their season Saturday by hosting D'Youville before closing the weekend against the Wildcats.
