Daemen volleyball ladies that is. For the second straight Saturday, the Wildcats emerged with a sweep of two tournament matches, improving to 4-3 this season in the process. Daemen opened today's action at the Cavalier Invitational on the campus of Walsh University by posting a 3-0 victory (25-13, 28-26, 25-16) over the Notre Dame (Ohio) Falcons. It marked the Wildcats' sixth straight win in the series with NDC, a former rival in the now-defunct American Mideast Conference that competes in the Mountain East Conference nowadays. The Falcons entered this weekend's tournament with a 5-0 record, but the loss to Daemen dropped them to 6-2 overall. The Wildcats went on to conclude the tournament with a 3-1 dispatching (25-23, 20-25, 25-19, 25-20) of the Mercyhurst Lakers. It marked Daemen's first win in the series since 2011, snapping a three-match slide to the Lakers. It was the Lakers' third loss of the weekend, dropping them to 3-5 this season. The Wildcats leave the Cavalier Invitational after posting a 2-1 record this weekend. They fell in a five-set thriller to Davenport last evening. The Wildcats also swept Saturday matches at last weekend's Warrior Invitational hosted by Wayne State. IMPACT PLAYERS Graduate student Caitlyn Meyer (Clarence, N.Y.) continued her offensive assault. The James Madison transfer totaled 32 kills for the day, leading Daemen with 15 kills vs. NDC and 17 more in the win over Mercyhurst. She added 19 digs for the day, including a season-high 10 vs. Mercyhurst for her double-double as a Wildcat. Sophomore Vanessa Kuliga (Glenview, Ill.) was dominant out of the middle vs. NDC, powering down a career-high 14 kills without committing a hitting error. She finished with a .667 hitting percentage vs. the Falcons, and added seven more kills vs. Mercyhurst. Junior outside hitter Maggie Burns (Louisville, N.Y.) posted 10 kills and senior outside hitter Sam Logan (Eden, N.Y.) chipped in with eight vs. the Falcons. Junior middle blocker Loren Alberts (Huntley, Ill.) added nine kills and three blocks vs. Mercyhurst. Sophomore Olivia Alessi (East Aurora, N.Y.) once again handled the setting duties. She averaged 11.3 assists per set today, totaling 79 assists. After recording her first career double-double in Daemen's loss to Davenport, she added two more today. Alessi finished with 43 assists and 11 digs in the win over NDC, and followed up with 36 assists and a season-high 17 digs against the Lakers. Sophomore libero Jasmine Brundage (East Aurora, N.Y.) totaled 29 digs between the two matches to pace the Wildcat defense. INSIDE THE BOX SCORE VS. NOTRE DAME Daemen posted a season-best .377 hitting percentage after putting down 52 kills with just 12 hitting errors. Daemen led the second set 23-19, but NDC rallied and had a chance to win the set after taking a 24-23 lead. Daemen would take five of the next seven points to stave off the Falcon rally, including two kills from Kuliga and and the set-clincher from Burns. The Wildcats jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the third set and breezed to the straight-sets victory. INSIDE THE BOX SCORE VS. MERCYHURST Daemen out-killed the Lakers, 54-40. After committing 17 hitting errors in the opening two sets, the Wildcats made just nine in the third and fourth sets. With the match knotted at one set apiece, the Wildcats put down 14 kills and had a match-high .256 hitting percentage in the pivotal third set. The turning point of the match came when the Wildcats went on a 28-14 run spanning the third and fourth sets. Daemen turned an 11-10 deficit into a 20-15 lead that Mercyhurst couldn't recover from. Meyer accounted for four kills over the final 15 points of the third set, and added another in a 13-5 spurt to open the fourth. UP NEXT The Wildcats wrap up the tournament portion of their 2021 schedule next weekend when they face regional foes New Haven, American International and Stonehill at the Redhawks Invitational on the campus of Roberts Wesleyan September 17-18.
