DAEMEN DUELS — COMPLETE RESULTS

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. - The Daemen College women's cross country team turned in a dominant effort today en route to claiming the team championship at the Daemen Duels, which took place at Bassett Park in Williamsville, N.Y. It marked the first meet hosted by Daemen since the 2017 NCAA Division II East Region Championships, which were held at Audubon Golf Course.

Daemen produced the top four and seven of the top eight finishers in today's race. Daemen posted 16 points to place first, followed by Houghton College (53) and D'Youville College (69). SUNY Erie was also represented today, but did not have enough runners to score as a team. Daemen, which placed first at the Frank Dillon Memorial Invitational hosted by Le Moyne College last weekend, has now posted back-to-back team wins for first time since the program gained NCAA Division II status in 2015.

Daemen also produced the individual champion for the second straight week. Redshirt senior Kassandra Nolet (Fort Erie, Ont.) placed first overall for the first time in her three-year career, as she topped the field of 22 runners with a personal-best time of 18:46.2. Freshman Marcy Colca (Getzville, N.Y.), who placed first at the Frank Dillon Memorial Tournament last weekend, also came in under 19 minutes and placed second with a time of 18:56.0.

Daemen will be idle until Sept. 25 when the Wildcats take part in the Harry F. Anderson Invitational on the campus of Roberts Wesleyan College in Rochester, N.Y.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • All 11 members of the Daemen roster competed today.
  • Nolet knocked over a minute off her previous best time of 19:57.4 that she set at the 2019 Harry F. Anderson Invitational. Her time today also ranks as the ninth fastest time by a Daemen runner in a 5K race since the program gained NCAA Division II status in 2015.
  • Colca, a graduate of Williamsville North High School, posted the fastest time by a Daemen freshman in a 5K race since the program gained NCAA Division II status in 2015. The previous best time by a freshman was set by Tara Pede (19:02.1) at the 2017 East Coast Conference Championships.
  • Junior Courtney Merrill (Speedway, Ind.) and senior Sarah Golas (Alden, N.Y.) also posted a top-five effort for the Wildcats today. Merrill, who is in her first season with the cross country team, placed third with a time of 19:50.0. Golas placed fourth with a personal-best time of 20:15.0—eclipsing her previous best time of 20:22.2 that she set at the 2019 Canisius Alumni Classic.
  • Sophomore Haley Hinds (Blossvale, N.Y.) also figured in the team scoring for Daemen, as she placed sixth with a time of 20:46.0.
  • Redshirt junior Hannah Thomas (Cheektowaga, N.Y.), freshman Emma Cain (Lockport, N.Y.) and sophomore Camryn Bailey (Geneva, N.Y.) also finished among the top ten runners today. Thomas placed seventh (21:10.6), Cain placed eighth (2119.9) and Bailey made her collegiate debut and placed 10th (21:58.7).
  • Sophomore Emma Grzebinski (West Seneca, N.Y.), redshirt senior Amanda Bushway (East Aurora, N.Y.) and freshman Megan Chamberlin (Amherst, N.Y.) rounded out the field of Daemen runners. Grzebisski placed 13th (22:30.2), Bushway posted a personal-best time for a 5K race and placed 15th (22:54.3) and Chamberin finished 18th (24:24.0).
