Women's Track and Field Places Fifth at ECC Indoor Championships

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - The Daemen University women's track and field team finished fifth out of 10 teams at the 2023 East Coast Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships held tonight at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.

Daemen recorded 65 team points. Holy Family University (119 points) edged out Georgian Court University (108.67 points) to claim the title. The University of the District of Columbia (91), Roberts Wesleyan University (74.33) and Daemen rounded out the top five.

Graduate student Kassandra Nolet (Fort Erie, Ontario) capped off an outstanding indoor season, as she placed first in the mile and finished second in both the 1,000 and 3,000 meters. Sophomore Alyssa Amirato (Depew, N.Y.) broke her own school-record in the triple jump and also posted a top-10 effort in the long jump.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Nolet began her night by placing first out of 13 runners in the mile. She overcame Acacia Barber of Roberts Wesleyan down the stretch and crossed the finish line with a personal best time of 5:08.27—eclipsing her previous best time of 5:15.42 that she set earlier this year at the YSU Mid Major Invitational. The time was just three seconds shy of the school record (5:05.54) set by Mackenzie Donahue at the 2017 Brockport Multi Invitational. Nolet would go on to place second in both the 1,000 meters (3:06.00) and the 3,000 meters (10:46.06). Nolet has run nine races this season and has placed in the top five in all nine races. She placed first in the mile at three events this season.
  • Amirato set a school record in the triple jump for second time this season, as she placed fourth out of 12 entrants with a leap of 10.84 meters—breaking her own record of 10.75 meters that she set earlier this year at the Houghton December Classic. Amirato, who also set the program record in the long jump (5.02 meters) last month at the YSU Mid Major Invitational, placed ninth in the long jump tonight with a leap of 4.75 meters.
  • Nolet was one of five Daemen runners to take part in the mile and four of them posted a personal best time. Junior Camryn Bailey (Geneva, N.Y.) placed second among Daemen runners and fourth overall with a personal best time of 5:24.32. Junior Emma Grzebinski (West Seneca, N.Y.) placed sixth overall with a time of 5:39.17. Freshmen Kennedy Pino (Spencerport, N.Y) and Hayley Pizur (Grand Island, N.Y.) placed ninth and 10threspectively with personal best times of 6:22.73 and 6:26.63.
  • Bailey also took part in the 3,000 meters, while Grzebinski also ran the 1,000 meters. Bailey placed fourth in the 3,000 (11:05.18), while Grzebinski placed sixth in the 1,000 (3:13.72).
  • Graduate student Hannah Thomas (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) placed third out of 16 runners in the 800 meters, as she posted a personal best time for an indoor event (2:23.86).
  • Senior Courtney Merrill (Speedway, Ind.) saw her first action of the season and placed fifth in the 3,000 meters with a time of 11:20.44.
  • Freshman Patsy Oberholzer (Greece, N.Y.) ran the 5,000 meters for the first time in her brief career and placed third with a time of 19:20.18.
  • Freshman Becca Schultz (Grand Island, N.Y.) took part in three events. She qualified for the finals in the 60-meter hurdles after posting a time of 9.60 in the preliminary round. She would go on to place sixth in the finals with a personal best time of 9.51 seconds—narrowly missing the program record of 9.47 seconds set by Sam Carro at the 2018 Highlander Invitational. Schultz would also place 13th in the long jump (4.48 meters) and 10thin the triple jump (9.44 meters)
  • Sophomore Sydney Taylor (Brockport, N.Y.) took part in the 60-meter hurdles and the high jump. She did not qualify for the finals in the 60-meter hurdles after posting a time of 10.16 seconds in the preliminary round. She capped her night with a seventh place showing in the high jump (1.45 meters).
  • Freshman Angelina Natale (Rochester, N.Y.) placed 16th in the long jump (4.26 meters) and 12th in the triple jump (9.22 meters).
  • Sophomore Elizabeth Bentley (Belmont, N.Y.), senior Skye Dorcely (Buffalo, N.Y.) and freshman Samantha Kabel (Alexander, N.Y.) all took part in the shot put and weight throw. Bentley placed fifth out of 23 entrants in the weight throw with a personal best toss of 13.18  meters. She also posted a personal best effort for an indoor event in the shot put (9.17 meters). Dorcely placed sixth in the weight throw (13.09 meters), while Kabel posted a personal best toss of 8.50 meters in the shot put.
  • Daemen's 4,000 medley relay team of Thomas, Merrill and freshmen Grace Gominiak (Darien Center, N.Y.) and Alexis Nguyen (Grand Island, N.Y.) placed third with a time of 13:16.65.
  • Daemen's 4x400 relay team of Thomas, Grzebinski, Gominiak and freshman Alexis Rodriguez (Williamson, N.Y.) placed sixth with a time of 4:22.84.
