Women's Tennis Travels To Millersville and Kutztown For Two Non-League Matches

AMHERST, N.Y. -- The Daemen women's tennis team will play two non-league matches in Pennsylvania this weekend. The Wildcats will face Millersville on Sunday (Sept. 24) and then take on Kutztown on Monday. (Sept. 25). Daemen has started the season 3-0, which equals the best start in program history,

THE WILDCATS
Daemen opened dual match play back on Sept. 9-10 with back-to-back wins over St. John Fisher University (8-1) and William Smith College (5-4), and remained unbeaten after opening East Coast Conference play with a 7-0 win over D'Youville this last Tuesday. Head coach Richard Greco, Jr. returns five players from last year's team and the 2023-24 roster features four newcomers (two transfers, two freshmen). Senior Frida Rubio (San Diego, Calif.) and Kitsa Scime (Williamsville, N.Y.) top the list of returning players. Rubio enters her fourth season with the program this fall. The ECC Rookie of the Year and second team All-ECC pick as a freshman in 2021-22, she is 3-3 in singles play so far this season and recorded her 27th career singles win during the victory over D'Youville. Scime enjoyed an outstanding second season with the program last year. Playing primarily No. 2 singles throughout the year, she went 15-6 in singles play. Her 15 wins last year rank as the second most in a single season in program history, behind only Christina Stasiuk who posted 18 wins during the 2017-18 season. A second-team All-ECC pick and team MVP last year, Scime is 5-2 in singles play this year and recorded her 28th career singles win during the win over D'Youville. She is now 23-9 in her last 32 singles matches dating back to the end of her freshman season. Junior Yinett Del Leon (Cape Coral, Fla.) is 3-4 in singles play this year, while sophomore Carly Armitage (Rochester, N.Y.) is 3-1. Freshman Maya Chon (Wichita, Kan.) picked up her first career singles win during the season-opening Allegheny Invitational over Labor Day Weekend and is 2-2 in singles play thus far. Junior transfer Emily Jablonski (Alden, N.Y.) has won two of her last three singles matches.

 

THE MARAUDERS
Millersville is a NCAA Division II member of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). Sunday's match will be the first dual match of the year for the Marauders. Millersville went 9-10 overall (6-1 in the PSAC) last year and lost to Indiana University of Pennsylvania in the semifinals of the PSAC Tournament. Juniors Hui Jen Soo and Chloe Abramowitz both earned All-PSAC last year, while sophomore Sophie Lanius was voted the PSAC Freshman of the Year after going 9-11 in singles play as a rookie.
 
SERIES HISTORY
Sunday's match will mark just the fourth all-time meeting between the two schools, and the first since the 2019-20 season. Millersville owns a 2-1 advantage in the all-time series.

 

THE GOLDEN BEARS
Kutztown is a NCAA Division II member of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). The Golden Bears (1-1, 0-0 PSAC) opened the year with a 7-9 loss to Chestnut Hill, before posting a 7-0 win over Cedar Crest this past Friday. Kutztown plays at Scranton on Sunday before hosting Daemen on Monday. The Golden Bears went 8-10 overall and 4-3 in the PSAC last year. Their top two players from last year return. Junior Ava Lewis and senior Sarah Lazarchak return after playing No. 1 and No.2 singles last year.
 
SERIES HISTORY
Monday's match will mark just the third all-time meeting between the two schools. The series is tied 1-1 and Daemen prevailed last season, posting a 7-0 win at Kutztown.

Daemen returns to action Wednesday (Sept. 27) when it plays a non-league match at SUNY Fredonia.
