The Wildcats will travel to Fredonia State on Wednesday (Sept. 27) and then play at Division I Niagara University on Saturday. THE WILDCATS Daemen opened dual match play back on Sept. 9-10 with back-to-back wins over St. John Fisher University (8-1) and William Smith College (5-4), and remained unbeaten after opening East Coast Conference play with a 7-0 win over D'Youville this last Tuesday. The Wildcats suffered their first loss of the year following a 5-2 setback at Millersville this past Sunday. Head coach Richard Greco, Jr. returns five players from last year's team and the 2023-24 roster features four newcomers (two transfers, two freshmen). Senior Frida Rubio (San Diego, Calif.) and Kitsa Scime (Williamsville, N.Y.) top the list of returning players. Rubio enters her fourth season with the program this fall. The ECC Rookie of the Year and second team All-ECC pick as a freshman in 2021-22, she is 4-3 in singles play so far this season and recorded her 28th career singles win during the loss to Millersville. Scime enjoyed an outstanding second season with the program last year. Playing primarily No. 2 singles throughout the year, she went 15-6 in singles play. Her 15 wins last year rank as the second most in a single season in program history, behind only Christina Stasiuk who posted 18 wins during the 2017-18 season. A second-team All-ECC pick and team MVP last year, Scime is 6-2 in singles play this year and recorded her 29th career singles win during the loss over Millersville. She is now 24-9 in her last 33 singles matches dating back to the end of her freshman season. Junior Yinett Del Leon (Cape Coral, Fla.) is 3-5 in singles play this year, while sophomore Carly Armitage (Rochester, N.Y.) is 3-2. Freshman Maya Chon (Wichita, Kan.) picked up her first career singles win during the season-opening Allegheny Invitational over Labor Day Weekend and is 2-3 in singles play thus far. Junior transfer Emily Jablonski (Alden, N.Y.) has won two of her last four singles matches. CONFERENCE HONORS FOR SCIME AND CHON Junior Kitsa Scime (Williamsville, N.Y.) and freshman Maya Chon (Wichita, Kan.) were honored by the East Coast Conference for their outstanding play last week. Scime was named the ECC Player of the Week and Chon was tabbed ECC Rookie of the Week. The announcement of award winners was made via the league's weekly sport report which was released Monday afternoon. THE BLUE DEVILS Fredonia is a NCAA Division III member of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC). The Blue Devils (1-5, 0-2 SUNYAC) will be playing their first match since suffering a 9-0 loss at Grove City back on Sept. 16. Fredonia went 0-12 last year. SERIES HISTORY Wednesday's match will mark the sixth all-time meeting between the two schools. Daemen has prevailed in the last three meetings and owns a 3-2 advantage in the series. The Wildcats posted a 6-1 win over the Blue Devils last year at Williamsville South High School. THE PURPLE EAGLES Niagara is a NCAA Division I member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). The Purple Eagles (0-2, 0-0 MAAC) suffered losses to Buffalo (7-0) and St. Bonaventure (6-1) last weekend at UB. Niagara went 5-13 overall and 2-4 in the MAAC last year. SERIES HISTORY Saturday's match will mark the eighth all-time meeting between the two schools. Niagara has prevailed in the previous seven meetings, including a a 7-0 win last year at Niagara. UP NEXT Daemen is idle until Oct. 6 when it plays an East Coast Conference match at the University of the District of Columbia.
