Grzebinski and Oliver lead Daemen's efforts at Houghton December Classic

HOUGHTON, N.Y. - The Daemen women's track and field team took part in the Houghton December Classic to kick-off their indoor season. The meet was held at the Kerr-Pegula Field House on the campus of Houghton University.

Sophomore Kristen Oliver (Massena, N.Y.) claimed first place in the weight throw while graduate student Emma Grzebinski (West Seneca, N.Y.) set a new career-best and finished in the top-10 of the 5000 meters to lead the Wildcats efforts.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
• Starting in the field, the Wildcats field efforts were led by Oliver as she placed first out of 33 throwers in the weight throw with a toss of 14.49 meters. Her winning toss came on her fourth and final throw in the event as well. Oliver also finished fifth out of 37 in the shot put (10.40 meters) to round her strong day in the field. 
• Oliver was not the only Daemen thrower to find success as Samantha Kabel (Alexander, N.Y.) set a new personal-best in shot put (9.35 meters) while Julia Petry (Batavia, N.Y) and Grace Covey (Clarence, N.Y.) secured career-best performances in the weight throw. Petry set a new high with a toss of 12.44 meters while Covey secured a new career-best with a throw of 12.32 meters.
• Junior Angelina Natale (Rochester, N.Y.) finished 10th in the high jump with a final height of 1.37 meters. 
• Four Wildcats competed in the triple jump, led by senior Alyssa Amirato (Depew, N.Y.) who finished third (10,30 meters) and Quickey who came close behind in fourth (10.21 meters). Amirato also finished the day with a top-10 outing in the long jump, coming in 10th (4.38 meters).
• Moving onto the track, Grzebinski turned in a career-best performance in the 5000 meters, finishing the race with a time of 19:42.41 and landing in sixth place. Later in the meet, Grezbinski again turned in a career-best performance as she placed fourth in the 600 meters race (1:49.36).
• Three different members of the Wildcats represented Daemen in the 60 meters dash with freshman Margaret Middaugh (Akron, N.Y.) finishing fourth in her heat and 12th overall (8.52 seconds) in her collegiate debut to lead the 'Cats sprinters.
• Daemen found success in the 4x200 meters relay race as the combination of sophomore Abbie Herman (Hamburg, N.Y.), freshman D'Naesha Quicksey (Buffalo, N.Y.), junior Grace Gominiak (Darien Center, N.Y.) and Middaugh placed third with a time of 1:59.07. Gominiak also set a personal-best in the 300 meters (49.21 seconds) as well.
