Women's Tennis Prepares to Face Niagara

ON THE COURT
The Daemen University women's tennis team heads north to face regional rival Niagara University with opening serve set for 11 a.m. on Sept. 14.

WEEKLY WINNERS
The Daemen University women's tennis team swept the East Coast Conference women's tennis weekly awards as senior Kitsa Scime (Williamsville, N.Y.) was named the ECC Player of the Week while freshman Bella Bjerkan (Elmhurst, Ill.) was tabbed the circuits rookie of the week, the league office announced on Sept. 10. Scime and Bjerkan each went a perfect 4-0 for the weekend, going 2-0 at both singles and doubles. For Scime, she now sits nine wins away from the program record for singles wins in a career. Daemen also had senior Yinett Del Leon (Cape Coral Fla. and freshman Stephanie Baier (Boise, Idaho) tabbed to the ECC Weekly Honor Roll. Both Del Leon and Baier went 2-0 on singles and 2-0 on doubles over the weekend, playing in both matches.
 
HOT START
For the second consecutive year, Daemen began the year with three consecutive wins under head coach Richard Greco, Jr. The Wildcats began their campaign with a 7-0 win over Hougton University on Sept. 7, before following it up with a 6-1 the next day against Allegheny University. Daemen extended their winning streak with a 6-1 win over Nazareth this past Tuesday.
 
WILDCATS IN THE POLLS
The Wildcats were tabbed fourth in the 2024 East Coast Conference Women's Tennis Preseason Coaches' Poll following a vote of the leagues six coaches back on Aug. 19. Greco has led Daemen to the postseason all three years while at the helm of the program, qualifying as the fourth seed last season. Queens College, the defending ECC Regular Season champions, received four first-place votes and topped the poll with 34 points. Defending ECC Tournament champions St. Thomas Aquinas College finished second in the poll, garnering two first-place votes (31 points) and the University of the District of Columbia (24 points) rounded out the top three. The ECC Women's Tennis Championship is set for Oct. 25-26 in Flushing, N.Y., with the top four teams qualifying.
SCOUTING NIAGARA
The Purple Eagles will begin their season this weekend when they take on the Wildcats. During the 2023-24 campaign, Niagara compiled an 8-2 overall record and 4-2 mark in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play before falling to Quinnipiac University in the first round of the MAAC Women's Tennis Championship.
 
SERIES HISTORY
Niagara has won all eight prior meetings between the two sides with the series dating back to March 5, 2016.
UP NEXT
The Wildcats are back home on Sept. 20 against the University of the District of Columbia for their first ECC match of the year. Opening serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. at  Miller Tennis Center.
