AMHERST, N.Y. -- The Daemen University men's tennis team will host St. Thomas Aquinas on Saturday, April 11 at 1:30 PM at the Miller Tennis Center in Williamsville, N.Y. in an East Coast Conference match up. Daemen comes into the match with a 4-13 overall record and 0-5 record in ECC action. Still in search of their first conference victory of the season, the Wildcats are coming off a 5-2 victory over Houghton on Tuesday that snapped a seven-match losing streak.
In Tuesday's 5-2 victory over Houghton, the Wildcats earned the first point of the match by winning two of three doubles matches. Junior
Lasse Mergens (Bochum, Germany) and senior
Rohan Chitanand (Den Haag, Netherlands) earned a big 6-1 victory at first doubles over Houghton's Rune Camps and Eben Schilke. At No. 2 doubles, junior
Lucas Garcia (Bogota, Columbia) and sophomore
Riley Fitzgerald (Auburn, N.Y.) collected a 6-1 win over Preston Tobalski and Jason Murphy to seal the first point for the Wildcats. In a very competitive third doubles, Houghton pulled away with the 7-5 win over sophomore
Vondin Henderson (Tonawanda, N.Y.) and freshman
Joey LaBrake (Lancaster, N.Y.). Daemen won four of six singles pairings to take the match 5-2. Garcia earned a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Camps at first singles. Mergens cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 second singles win over Schilke at No. 2 singles. At third singles, Chitanand won 6-1 in the first set before Tobalski retired the match. Henderson collected a 6-3, 6-4 win over Benjamin Unger at fifth singles. Houghton won fourth singles and sixth singles.
St. Thomas Aquinas put together a historic 2025 campaign that saw the Spartans run all the way to the NCAA Division II Sweet 16. The Spartans come into Saturday's match with a 12-3 overall record and 4-0 record in ECC matches. STAC has won six straight matches, with their last loss coming on Friday, March 13 on their spring break trip to Orlando, Fla. Returning to the STAC roster this year 2025 ECC Rookie of the Year Erik Victor Tauson. In the first matchup between Daemen and STAC on March 21, the Spartans topped the Cats 7-0.
Daemen will close out the 2025-26 season next Saturday, April 18 as they host the University of the District of Columbia at 6:30 PM.
