Daemen Earns Five Gold Medals and Place Fourth at ECC Outdoor Championships

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Daemen men's track and field team competed at the ECC Outdoor Championships on Thursday at Roberts Wesleyan.

The Wildcats finished in fourth place out of eight teams with 74 points. Daemen took home seven medals, including five gold, one silver, and one bronze.

Ethan Keating (Wooster, Ohio) led the way for the Wildcats with two gold medals, winning both the 10,000m and the 5,000m. Adam Kamagate earned a gold medal at the outdoor championships for the second straight season, winning the 400m hurdles. Daemen's 4x800m relay team of Josh Trometer, Johnson, Brendan Smukall, and Ibrahim Hakizimana (Rochester, N.Y.) also took home a first. CJ Johnson (Baltimore, Md.) earned two medals, winning the 1500m and placing second in the 800m. Simon Evans (Galway, N.Y.) joined Keating on the podium in 10,000m, placing third. 

Kamagate, Keating, Trometer, Smukall, and Hakizimana garnered First Team All-ECC accolades for their first and second-place finishes. Evans and Hakizimana were also named Second Team All-ECC for their third and fourth-place performances. 

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Keating first won the 10,000m, posting a program record time of 32:53.87. Evans came in behind him in third, logging a time of 33:36.78. 
  • Later, Keating took home gold in the 5,000m with a time of 15:57.36
  • Kamagate earned a victory in the 400m hurdles with a time of 56.52 seconds, ranking fifth in program history.
  • Johnson earned his first medal of the day in the 1500m, finishing in 4:02.55 for gold, ranking third in program history. Brad Tobin (Hamburg, N.Y.) also took 10th with a time of 4:43.35. 
  • Daemen's 4x800m relay team of Trometer, Johnson, Smukall, and Hakizimana earned first with a time of 8:18.80
  • Johnson then competed in the 800m, logging a PR time of 1:57.39, finishing second, good for fifth in the team record book. Hakizimana followed with a fourth-place finish, logging a time of 2:00.03. 
  • The Wildcats' 4x100m relay team of Zayvion Davis (Lansing, N.Y.), Owen Dernbach (Alden, N.Y.), Devon Mendez (Hartford, Conn.), and Seth Connery (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) finished fourth with a time of 44.98 seconds.
