AMHERST, NY - A late goal off the head of Michael Dix lifted the visiting Houghton Highlanders to a 2-1 victory over the Daemen Wildcats on a damp and dreary Saturday afternoon at Dimp Wagner Stadium. With the score knotted at 1-1, it appeared as if the game was destined for overtime but Dix connected on a crossing feed from Paul Seddon in the 85th minute to lift Houghton (3-9-3, 2-4-1) to their third win of the season. Daemen, meanwhile, falls to 3-9, 1-6.
After a scoreless first half, Seddon opened the scoring in the 46th minute when he converted a penalty kick that was awarded when a Daemen defender took down a Houghton player inside the box.
A bit of a dust-up in the 51st minute followed and the Wildcats regained their composure despite receiving three yellow cards. Their chance to tie the game came in the 55th minute when Houghton's Jonathan Figueroa was sent off for hauling down Daemen's
Kyle Clifford in the box on a breakaway. Clifford buried the ensuing the penalty kick and gave the Wildcats life as they were surging for their first home win of the season.
Houghton scored the breakthrough goal when Daemen cleared a Seddon corner kick out of the box but back to the awaiting foot of Seddon who served a perfect pass into the box. Dix, a tall athlete, had at least a head and shoulders advantage on nearly every Daemen defender and was able to out-jump his mark, heading the ball inside the near post.
Daemen will regroup and look to end their seven game skid next Saturday at Point Park.
