AMHERST, NY - A late second half meltdown cost the Daemen Wildcats this afternoon as they dropped a 5-3 decision in American Mideast Conference play to the visiting Point Park Pioneers on a beautiful fall day at Amherst's Dimp Wagner Stadium. The loss is the fourth straight for Daemen as they fall to 3-6, 1-3 on the season.
Daemen's
Kyle Clifford knotted the score at 1-1 with his tally in the 56th minute. Teammate Juan Esguerra took a feed from freshman
Stephen Linderman off a corner kick and sent a shot towards the net that deflected in off Clifford's body. With the goal, things seemed to be turning in Daemen's favor, but not for long.
Point Park quickly responded with three consecutive goals - two by Austria-native Wendelin Hobel as well as a penalty kick tally from Alex Sala to lead 4-1.
Clifford added his second of the day off a fine feed from fellow sophomore
Jared Contreras in the 74th minute to temporarily bring Daemen within striking distance. With the score at 4-2 late in the game, what appeared to be a handball by a Point Park defender inside his own box was not whistled and a penalty kick that could have cut the deficit to one went awry.
Point Park was able to jump back ahead by three when Matt Annecchiarico found the back of the net in the 84th minute.
Daemen's
Zakariah Hall would score with just 20 ticks remaining to close out the scoring.
Daemen looks to rebound on Columbus Day when they host Walsh at 2:30pm.
