HOUGHTON, NY - Despite a valliant effort, the Daemen Wildcats could not find the back of the net and suffered their first setback in conference play tonight as they fell to the host Houghton Lady Highlanders, ranked #13 nationally, by the final score of 3-0 in a key American Mideast Conference match-up. Daemen drops to 7-3, 2-1 while Houghton improves to 8-1, 3-0.
"I am very proud of the game we played tonight," said Daemen head coach
Dan Dolan. "We played fantastic in the first half despite being down a goal early. I thought we started to get tired in the second half and Houghton took advantage of it."
Houghton's Amanda Zacchigna put the Lady Highlanders ahead in the fourth minute of the contest. She scored on a feed from Alyssa Figueroa.
The score remained 1-0 until Zacchigna scored again, this time on an assist by Jen Hudson in the the 51st minute. Hudson then provided the game's final score when Figueroa played a through ball to her and she finished the play.
The two teams figure to be amongst the AMC leaders this season and will meet again at Daemen on Saturday, October 15.
"We know what we have to work on and we'll have it fixed by the next time we play them," Dolan added.
In the meantime, Daemen is back in action this Saturday, October 1 with a road test at Carlow. The Wildcats handed the Celtics a 5-0 loss in their first match-up of the season back on September 17.
