AMHERST, NY - The Daemen Wildcats dropped their second consecutive game this afternoon in a 4-1 final to the visiting Maine-Fort Kent Bengals who are the defending National Champions of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association. With the loss, Daemen falls to 1-2 while UMFK improves to 3-1.
"Our goal is to play quality opponents and improve each and every day. Today was a prime example of that; we ran into a very good team and I think our team improved today," said first-year Daemen head coach
Mark Spacone. "We made some adjustments throughout the game and once we fixed things we performed much better. The second half was a good showing for us."
The Bengals jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead as freshman Phathizwe Sacolo struck the ball inside the far right post from the left wing on a beautiful feed from senior Keith Williams II in the fourth minute of the contest. Williams would add his own tally in the 32nd minutes to put UMFK up 2-0.
Daemen striker
Kyle Clifford (West Seneca, NY/St. Francis High School) trimmed the Bengal lead to just one when he notched his fourth goal of the season in the 44th minute. Clifford's goal was a beauty as he took a long through pass from defender
Alvaro Orozco (Barranquilla, Colombia), headed it to himself and hammered a shot inside the near post from 25 yards out.
The Bengals responded quickly with a goal by reserve forward Wilfried Monthe as he headed in a crossing feed from winger Jamie De Abreu in the last minute of the half to re-establish their two-goal cushion.
Williams would add his second goal of the contest early in the second half as he used his head on a corner kick feed from midfielder Jack Petrie.
UMFK goalkeeper David Girouard needed to make just one save in the game to pick up the win as Daemen managed just eight total shots and two shots on goal. Compare that to 17 total shots and 11 shots on goal for the visitors.
Daemen returns to the pitch this coming Saturday when they travel to Boston to open up their 2011 American Mideast Conference schedule against new conference member Fisher College.
