Box Score AMHERST, NY - Two late goals from the Brockport Golden Eagles spoiled a tremendous effort by Daemen goalkeeper
Matt Daddario (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home HS) tonight, as the Golden Eagles walked away with a 2-1 victory in overtime over the host Daemen Wildcats at Dimp Wagner Stadium.
With a steady mist falling throughout the contest, Daddario stood on his head and played, arguably, the best game of his two-year career in defeat. The 6'0" sophomore made 12 consecutive saves, several of which were of highlight reel quality, carrying a shutout into the latter stages of the game.
Junior striker
Kyle Clifford (West Seneca, NY/St. Francis HS) put Daemen on the board with his first tally of the season in the 20th minute. After a Daddario save, the goalie punted the ball high and long into the night sky where it found the awaiting head of junior
Josh Radecki (South Wales, NY/Holland Central HS) beyond midfield. Radecki flicked a pass with his noggin' to a streaking Clifford who split two defenders before tapping the ball past the out-stretched arms of former Wildcat goalkeeper
Max Drexler, now in net for the Golden Eagles, to put the home-standing Wildcats ahead 1-0.
Drexler redeemed himself late in the first half when he thwarted a penalty kick attempt off the foot of Daemen sophomore
Stephen Linderman (Tonawanda, NY/Tonawanda HS). Drexler was whistled for a yellow card after taking down Wildcats' freshman
Caleb Holmes (Cuba, NY/Cuba-Rushford HS) in the box, but the big man's save was a pivotal moment in the match.
Despite the missed opportunity, it seemed as if Clifford's goal would hold up with Daddario standing tall in net for Daemen. Brockport's Paul Altobelli would get the equalizer, however, in the 83rd minute, as he headed in a crossing feed from Nick Tata.
The game took a physical tone, especially in the second half. Daemen was whistled for 18 fouls in the game while Brockport fouled on eight occasions. The influx of whistles allowed each team several good chances on free kicks in the attacking third. After the yellow card on Brockport's Drexler, Daemen picked up two yellow cards in the second half as well.
With the match knotted at 1-1, the team's headed to overtime. Daemen got solid play from freshman
Jordan Dean (Greece, NY/Greece Olympia HS) in the midfield and Clifford generated a couple chances with two low, liners going just wide from the top of the box.
The golden goal came in the 98th minute as Brockport's Kevin Nichols found the ball amongst a scrum of players after a long throw-in to the Daemen box, booting the ball low and through the mass of humanity for the win.
With the victory, Brockport improves to 5-6 overall, having won four of their last five. Daemen falls to 2-6 with a chance to get back in the win column this Saturday when they travel to Sharoville, OH for a 1pm friendly against Ohio Mid-Western.
