EDINBORO, Pa. – The Daemen College women's tennis team fell tonight to the Fighting Scots of Edinboro University, 8-1 in a non-conference matchup at Westwood Racquet Club.
The result tonight sends Daemen to 8-13 overall this season while Edinboro improves to 6-1.
Daemen started the match strong, posting the first point, but ended up losing the next eight.
Juniors
Karli Hollins and
Hayle Scanlan put Daemen in a great position to start, winning their first doubles match 8-2 against Edinboro's Anastasiya Dasik and Marija Tmusic. Hollins and Scanlan's win put Daemen on the board first with one point.
The pairings of
Gretchen Ringler and
Jessica Robins, and
Maria McGrath and
Aman Shamaa did not fare as well in doubles matches two and three, respectively. Both duos ended up losing in identical scores of 8-1.
The Wildcats would go on to give Edinboro a run for their money in singles play.
In No. 1 singles, Hollins would put up a great fight, losing to Julia Hellstern 6-3, and 6-4. Teammate Scanlan would follow that tough performance up in No. 2 singles in a tenacious battle with the Fighting Scots' Dasik. Scanlan however, ended up losing 3-6, 6-2 and 7-6.
Ringler would give her all in singles No. 3, but would lose to Tmusic 6-4 and 6-3.
Despite the loss, the women's tennis team is 3-2 since starting spring play.
They will face their next opponent, the Purple Eagles of Niagara University, on March 5
at Miller Tennis Center.
