Wildcats Visit ECC Foes Queens & St. Thomas Aquinas, Also Adelphi

THE SERVE: The Daemen College men's tennis team opens a three-match weekend by visiting East Coast Conference foes Queens College and Saint Thomas Aquinas College before ending with a non-league tilt at Adelphi University...all three matches will be played at indoor facilities.

  • Daemen returns 11 players from its 2014-15 roster which achieved an overall record of 7-16, including a 1-5 mark in East Coast Conference play
  • In addition to the returners, the Wildcats welcome four fresh faces to the mix this season
  • The Wildcats were voted tied for fifth in the ECC preseason poll released in late January
  • The Wildcats went 1-2 in dual matches during their abbreviated fall season, closing with a 9-0 shutout of Houghton
  • Daemen blanked Elmira 9-0 at home on Feb. 6 in the team's opening match of the spring season, but have suffered through nine consecutive losses heading into this weekend, including close defeats to Cedarville (6-3), Le Moyne (6-3), Niagara (5-3) and Davis & Elkins (5-4)
  • The loss to Niagara came on Mar. 6, and it was the program's first-ever dual match against an NCAA Division I opponent
  • The Wildcats are coming off the one-point loss at Davis & Elkins on Mar. 20, in which Andrew LeMar and John LeMar each earned singles victories
  • Sophomore Mark Veitengruber, the team's MVP a season ago, leads the team with 11 singles victories in 20 matches
  • Redshirt-freshman Andrew LeMar has also made an immediate impact, going 8-12 in singles play thus far
  • In doubles play, seniors Joey Gentile and Gregory Lowe teamed up for their team-leading third win of the season in the match vs. Davis & Elkins
  • The Wildcats are also expected to regain the services of freshman David Gonzalez Villegas this weekend as he has worked his way back from an injury suffered last fall
  
WHAT'S NEXT: It'll be another three-match road trip for Daemen when the Wildcats visit District of Columbia (Apr. 8), Coppin State (Apr. 9) and University of the Sciences (Apr. 10) next week.

  • The Knights fell in last season's ECC championship match to NYIT, but did earn at at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament where they were bounced in the East Regional first round by Chestnut Hill
  • Returners Ryan Frankel, Sharvill Nawghre and Federico Toscano each earned second-team All-ECC honors last season, combining for a 33-8 record in singles matches
  • Frankel led the team with 12 singles wins last season
