Men's Tennis Concludes Road Stretch This Weekend

Wildcats Play ECC Match At UDC, Non-League Matches At Coppin State & U. Sciences

THE SERVE: The Daemen College men's tennis team concludes a string of eight consecutive road matches by visiting District of Columbia, Coppin State and U. Sciences this weekend...the match at UDC is an East Coast Conference match, while the second two come in non-league play...the match vs. Coppin State is Daemen's second-ever match against a Division I opponent, and their second of this season.

  • In addition to the returners, the Wildcats welcome four fresh faces to the mix this season
  • The Wildcats were voted tied for fifth in the ECC preseason poll released in late January
  • The Wildcats went 1-2 in dual matches during their abbreviated fall season, closing with a 9-0 shutout of Houghton
  • Daemen blanked Elmira 9-0 at home on Feb. 6 in the team's opening match of the spring season, but have suffered through 12 consecutive losses heading into this weekend, including close defeats to Cedarville (6-3), Le Moyne (6-3), Niagara (5-3), Davis & Elkins (5-4), St. Thomas Aquinas (5-4) and Adelphi (6-3)
  • The loss to Niagara came on Mar. 6, and it was the program's first-ever dual match against an NCAA Division I opponent
  • Six of Daemen's losses have come against NCAA Tournament teams from last season
  • The Wildcats are coming off the three-point loss at Adelphi last Sunday
  • Freshman David Gonzalez Villegas returned to the lineup last week after coming back from an injury, and he picked up singles victories in the matches vs. St. Thomas Aquinas and Adelphi
  • Senior Gregory Lowe has also won two consecutive singles matches heading into this weekend
  • Sophomore Mark Veitengruber, the team's MVP a season ago, leads the team with 11 singles victories
  • Redshirt-freshman Andrew LeMar has also made an immediate impact with eight singles victories thus far
  • In doubles play, Lowe has teamed up with classmate Joey Gentile for a team-best four victories as a pair
  
WHAT'S NEXT: Daemen hosts N.Y. Institute of Technology on April 16 for the team's first home match since March 6.
