Hayle Scanlan won in singles play today, but it wasn't enough to lead Daemen past Seton Hill Women's Tennis 9/11/2016 7:05:00 PM Mike Miranto, Associate A.D. for Communications Women's Tennis Falls At Seton Hill LATROBE, Pa. - The Daemen College women's tennis team's quest for its first 2-0 start in program history came up short today as the Wildcats fell 6-3 in non-league action to Seton Hill University at the Saint Vincent College Tennis Courts in the greater Pittsburgh area. Despite having just five healthy bodies, the host SHU Griffins won six of the seven actual matches that took place, with Daemen earning points at third doubles and sixth singles by default.  The match was SHU's 2016-17 season opener as they improve to 1-0 on the season, winning their first-ever dual match with the Wlidcats. Junior Paula Carvajalino (Valencia, Venezuela), the No. 16 ranked player in her home country of Venezuela prior to beginning her collegiate career, teamed with freshman Diana Carvajalino (Hurst, Texas) to knock off the Wildcats' senior duo of Karli Hollins (Orchard Park, N.Y./SUNY Geneseo) and Hayle Scanlan (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian) 8-5 in top doubles.  The Griffins' Madison DeBone (Greensburg, Pa.) and Jenna Bailey (Murrysville, Pa.) were 8-0 winners in second doubles over Shyalah Iverson (Canandaigua, N.Y./Naples) and Jessic Robins (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda). In singles play, Scanlan broke through with a win in the No. 2 position, besting Paula Carvajalino (1-6, 6-3, 1-0) despite dropping the first set.  The win added to Scanlan's program-record total of singles victories, now at 35 for her career. But, other than the default win at sixth singles for Delaney Fragale (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport), the hosts kept Daemen off the board.  Diana Carvajalino, Bailey, DeBone and Ana Salazar (Santiago, Chile) for the Griffins. The Wildcats were seeking the program's first-ever 2-0 start after downing Fairmont State University 8-1 in their season opener yesterday.  The loss drops them to 1-1 overall on the young season. Daemen jumps back into road action when they visist University of the District of Columbia to open East Coast Conference play this Friday, September 16.
