Feneziani Claims Medalist Honors In Golf Season Opener

PENN YAN, N.Y. - Daemen College golfer Mitch Feneziani (West Seneca, N.Y./West Seneca West) put up the low round of 74 (+3) to claim medalist honors, and help the Daemen men's golf team to a tie for third place in the team standings at today's Keuka Fall Invitational.  The one-day, 18-hole tournament was held at the par-71 Lakeside Country Club.

As a team, Daemen combined for 314 strokes (+34) to finish seven shots back of Oswego State (311, +27).  SUNY Delhi came in one stroke ahead (317, +33) for runner-up honors, as the Wildcats finished in a tie with SUNY Canton (318, +34) for third.  The tournament featured 59 golfers from 12 collegiate teams.

The performance today marked the first medalist finish of Feneziani's career.  The Daemen junior actually finished in a tie with SUNY Canton's Nolan Reid, but was awarded medalist honors by virtue of having the lower score on the No. 1 handicap hole.  The round of 74 was Feneziani's lowest since carding the same score at the United States Collegiate Athletic Association National Championships in October of 2014.

Sophomore Ryan Gibbons (Amherst, N.Y./Canisius) finished in a tie for third after shooting a five-over-par 76.  His score represented a career-best in a Daemen uniform, as did his finish in the medalist standings.

Junior Pauley Pitcher II (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Charles W. Baker), who tied for the individual medalist honors at this course in the Wildcats' 2015-16 season finale, came in tied for 18th today after shooting a round of 81 (+10).

Rounding out competition for the Wildcats today was junior Max Winterburn (Harrogate, England/Boroughbridge) and newcomer Chad Van Every (Jamestown, N.Y./Jamestown CC).  Winterburn carded a round of 87 (+16) to finish in a tie for 38th, while Van Every finished in a tie for 46th with a round of 93 (+22).

The tournament today also  marked the official debut of newly-hired head coach Andrew Bennett.  The Executive Director of The First Tee of Western New York, Bennett took the reins of the program earlier this year.

Daemen returns to tournament play at the Merychurst Invitational on September 25-26 at Lake View Country Club in North East, Pa.
