Wildcats Open League Play Friday Vs. Firebirds

The Daemen College men's tennis team returns home to open East Coast Conference play against the University of the District of Columbia on Friday evening at Miller Tennis Center...Daemen has already equaled its win total from all of last season, and junior Mark Veitengruber will be looking to break the program record for career singles wins.

ON THE SIDELINES
Stephen Beatty enters his fourth season as the head coach of the Wildcats...over the course of his first three seasons, Beatty has guided the Daemen men's tennis team to a 19-49 record...a former collegiate player at Division II Northwood University (Mich.) and Division III D'Youville College, Beatty got his coaching start as an assistant to Kelly Brown, serving for one season - Daemen's inaugural season of tennis competition - before being promoted to the top post.
   
DAEMEN GROUND STROKES (5-13, 0-0 ECC)
Daemen has rebounded from a slow start to win three of its last five dual matches, two of which have come by shutout...with five wins this season, the Wildcats have matched their win total from all of the 2015-16 season when they went 5-17 overall...the recent stretch of solid play began with a 9-0 shutout victory over Millersville on Mar. 5...in the win, senior John LeMar picked up the 31st doubles win of his career to become the program's all-time leader...freshman Fabian Wilde won in both singles and doubles against Millersville, and was subsequently named the ECC Rookie of the Week for matches played Feb. 27 through Mar. 5...the Wildcats followed up with back-to-back wins over Franklin (9-0) and Earlham (5-4) last week, before dropping matches to Southern Indiana (9-0) and Bellarmine (5-4)...in the win over Earlham, junior Mark Veitengruber earned the 32nd singles win of his career, tying the program record set by Gregory Lowe from 2012-16...Veitengruber, who set the program record for singles in in a season last year with 13, shares the team lead for singles wins this season with Wilde (both have seven singles wins)...LeMar has posted six singles victories, as have sophomores David Gonzalez Villegas and Ricardo Ruiz Martinez...in doubles play, Gonzalez Villegas and Ruiz Martinez have teamed together to go 5-5, while senior Adam Kerr and sophomore Justin Milner have come on to go 3-1 recently...individually, Gonzalez Villegas leads the team with nine doubles wins, and Veitengruber has posted eight...the Wildcats were picked sixth in the ECC preseason poll.
   
DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA GROUND STROKES (1-2, 0-0 ECC)
UDC is led by eighth-year head coach T. Richard Mahaffey, III who has led the Firebirds to a 65-51 record in his tenure...the three-time ECC Coach of the Year has led UDC to a trio of NCAA Tournament berths...the Firebirds return five players from their 2015-16 roster which achieved an overall record of 5-9 and an ECC record of 3-2...among the returners for UDC is junior Rok Bozic who earned second-team All-ECC honors last season after posting a 5-8 record in singles play, all of which came while positioned atop the Firebirds' lineup...the Firebirds opened their spring season last week with a narrow 5-4 defeat of Merrimack...UDC got three-set singles wins from Diego Pinto, Alexis Baguelin and Marco Feligioni to squeak out the dual match victory...UDC was picked third in the ECC preseason poll.
