From the desk of the Director of Athletics…

Hey there Wildcat fans! At this time last year, our July edition of Paw Prints reminded you to stay cool during the 2016 summer heat wave.  Well, it's been a little milder here on campus this summer and a little too wet for our liking, but just like last year, we are working hard getting ready for a fabulous 2017-18 year. Here are some updates:

Daemen Soccer: Our collaboration with The Park School of Buffalo to build a top quality natural grass field is now complete. Our first game there this season is set for Thursday, August 31 when our men's soccer team takes on regional rival Le Moyne College. The Grand Opening will take place on Friday, September 8 at 4 p.m. during Daemen's inaugural Founders Day Celebration, with our women's soccer team competing against Lake Erie College.

Daemen remains committed, and talks are ongoing with the Town of Amherst on further development opportunities, including a piece of land near the I-90 and I-290 interchange. We will be developing renderings of the project to share with the town board, residents and potential supporters. The goal of that project is to help the Town of Amherst build the first and only municipally-owned turf complex in the area that could be used by town residents as well as by Daemen's fall and spring sport teams.

Daemen Track:  Many of you have been enjoying the wonderfully fun and healthy vibe of our Summer Track Series each Thursday evening at Sweet Home High School. This all-comers event is truly for runners of all ages and abilities. We are thankful for the support of the presenting sponsor of the series, Lawley Insurance, and the $10 entry fee supports all that we do here at Daemen Athletics. We are excited that Daemen will be the host of not only the NCAA Division II East Region Cross Country Championships at Audubon Golf Course on Saturday, November 4, but also the East Coast Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in April of 2018.  Daemen Athletics takes its role in the WNY community very seriously and will continue to be a driver of sport tourism for WNY.  Both of those events will fill hotel rooms and restaurants as teams will travel from the New York City and Northeast regions to participate.

Daemen Summer Camps:  Our campus has been filled with campers on a daily basis, whether it be for basketball, volleyball or soccer camp, or our newly-implemented Olympic camp.  Our coaches and camp staff have done a phenomenal job in teaching the necessary skills to these youngsters, all while ensuring they have a safe and fun learning environment.  Camps and clinics continue to be great revenue drivers for Daemen Athletics, and we're certainly appreciative of the community's confidence in sending their children to spend some time with us in these summer months.

Daemen CAUSE:  We continue to build our Center for Allied and Unified Sport and Exercise at Daemen.  This month we will be holding focus groups for caregivers of those with special needs to learn how Daemen Athletics can help in providing meaningful programming to WNY residents.  More details to come on Daemen Athletics CAUSE initiatives…

5th Annual Wildcat Golf Classic: Lastly, I'd like to remind you that August will also bring our annual golf outing presented by RP Oak Hill Building Company, Inc.  This is our single largest fundraising event of the year and we are back at beautiful Glen Oak Golf Club in East Amherst for this year's event which runs on Thursday, August 10.  It's not too late to consider joining us that day, either for the full day which includes lunch, dinner and 18 holes of golf, or for our dinner-only option. If you're interested in learning more about the event, complete details can be found at daemenwildcats.com/wildcatgolfclassic or you can contact Vivian Heverley at vheverle@daemen.edu.   100% of the proceeds raised at the golf tournament go to support the student-athletes here at Daemen.  We hope to see you there.

As always, if you have any questions or comments about Daemen Athletics, feel free to email me at bniland@daemen.edu and remember to BE FIERCE!
