BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Daemen College women's cross country team took part in the Canisius Alumni Classic today. The 5,000-meter race took place in Delaware Park and featured some of the region's top teams from across NCAA Division I, II and III.
The Wildcats finished 10th in a ten-team race that featured six NCAA Division I programs, two NCAA Division II programs and two NCAA Division III programs.
The University at Buffalo claimed the team championship. The Bulls posted a score of 42 points, just six points better than second-place Canisius College (48). The University of Detroit-Mercy (105), SUNY Geneseo (120) and Youngstown State University (145) rounded out the top five. Siobhan Quinn of host Canisius finished first among the 120 contestants with a time of 17:40.7. It marks the third-straight year she has finished first at this event.
Sophomore Savannah Warner (Elma, N.Y.) paced the Wildcats this afternoon, as she bettered her career-best time in a 5K race by just 3/10 of a second and placed 31st with a time of 19:57.5. Her previous best 5K time of 19:57.8 came during the East Coast Conference Championships last fall. Warner has now been the top Daemen runner in four of the team's five races this year.
Freshman Sarah Golas (Alden, N.Y.) also posted a career-best 5K time this afternoon, as she placed 56th with a time of 20:38.2. Her previous best 5K time of 20:43.2 came three weeks ago at the Harry F. Anderson Invitational hosted by Roberts Wesleyan College.
Redshirt freshman Kassandra Nolet (Fort Erie, Ontario) and sophomores Taya Mucha (Lockport, N.Y.) and Ashley Dusza (Alden, N.Y.) rounded out the Daemen scorers today. Nolet placed 73rd with a time of 21:07.3, Mucha placed 97th (22:01.5), while Dusza came in 103rd (22:27.9).
Sophomore Mackenzie Tubbs (Elmira, N.Y.), junior Shania LiVecchi (West Seneca, N.Y.) and redshirt freshman Amanda Bushway (East Aurora, N.Y.) also competed for the Wildcats. Tubbs placed 109th (23:17.9), LiVecchi placed 114th (23:44.9) and Bushway finished 117th (23:57.1).
Daemen is idle until Nov. 3 when it takes part in the East Coast Conference Championships. The race will take place in Rochester, N.Y. on the campus of Roberts Wesleyan College.
