AMHERST, N.Y. - Ricardo Ruiz Martinez (Valencia, Spain) of the Daemen College men's tennis team has been named to the Google Cloud Academic All-District Men's At-Large Team selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

The academic recognition is another in a long list of achievements for Ruiz Martinez, a business administration major with a 3.91 grade-point average, who recently completed his junior season for the Wildcats. Last month he was named a second team All-East Coast Conference honoree marking the second consecutive season he had earned that recognition. The 2017-18 season saw Ruiz Martinez post a combined singles/doubles record of 29-24, registering the most wins in team history for a single season. He also shattered the team record for singles victories in a season after going 17-9, and his .654 winning percentage in singles play also set a team record. 

Ruiz Martinez has been arguably the Wildcats' most consistent player since joining the team midway through the 2016-17 season after transferring from American International College. He holds a combined singles/doubles record of 47-38 in his time with the Wildcats, including a 27-16 mark in singles play. He already ranks fifth in combined wins and tied for third in singles wins among Daemen's all-time leaders. He was also recognized with Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar-Athlete honors following his sophomore season. 

The Academic All-District Team recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the playing field and in the classroom. First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the Google Cloud Academic All-America® ballot, with Google Cloud Academic All-America® teams announced in June.

The Google Cloud Academic All-District® teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. The Google Cloud Academic All-America® program separately recognizes honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and College Division. The College Division includes all NAIA, Canadian, two-year schools and other affiliations.

The Division II and III Google Cloud Academic All-America® program is partially financially supported by the NCAA Division II and III national governance structures, to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2017-18 DII and DIII Academic All-America® teams.
