AMHERST, N.Y. – The Daemen College men's soccer team has been picked to finish ninth in the East Coast Conference this season according to the ECC preseason poll which was released today from the conference headquarters in West Babylon, N.Y. following a vote of the league's 10 head coaches.

Daemen earned 34 points on the poll after going 7-11 overall and 3-6 in the conference last season. The 26-man roster features 11 freshmen, 14 sophomores and only one senior. With such a young team, the Wildcats look to capitalize coming off one of its best season in school history.

The University of the District of Columbia (93) received only five more points than last year's ECC champions, LIU Post (88). District of Columbia and LIU Post were the only schools to receive votes for first place with UDC getting six and LIU Post getting four.

Mercy (75) and NYIT (74) round out the teams who were picked to finish in qualifying positions for the ECC Tournament. All four of those team finished in position for the ECC Tournament last year with at least eight wins apiece.

Queens sits in fifth then follows Bridgeport, Molloy, St. Thomas Aquinas and in tenth is Roberts Wesleyan with Daemen, again, coming in ninth. Just nine points in the voting separates Daemen from sixth place Bridgeport.

In addition to announcing the preseason poll, Gabriel Torres of Dist. Columbia was named the ECC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, while Michael Agboola of Dist. Columbia was named Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. Torres led the ECC with 20 goals, 12 assists and 52 points last season. Agboola helped lead the Dist. Columbia to a second-place finish with one of the top defenses in the ECC last season.

Among the returners for Daemen are Noah Keem (Amherst, N.Y., Sweet Home), the leader in goals and points from last season, and Anthony Cupello (Rochester, N.Y., Greece Arcadia), who led the team in assists. These two helped lead Daemen to the third best offense in the ECC last season, and they will look to continue to propel Daemen on offense. Also back is sophomore midfielder Niklas Ringdahl Bohlin (Fjaras, Sweden) who was named the team's MVP in 2017.

Daemen opens its 2018 season in North Canton, Ohio against Walsh University on Thursday, August 30. ECC play kicks off with the Wildcats hosting Molloy on Saturday, September 15.  The ECC Tournament will feature the top four teams in the final regular season standings with the No. 1 and 2 seeds hosting semifinal games on October 31; the highest remaining seed hosts the tournament finals on November 3.
