GRAND ISLAND, N.Y. - The Daemen College women's cross country team placed three runners among the top nine finishers en route to a third place showing at the Daniel Walker Invitational here today. The 5K race took place at Beaver Island State Park and was hosted by Buffalo State College. It marked the 2018 season-opening event for Daemen, which finished first at this event last fall.
Host Buffalo State finished first among the five competing schools with 43 points. Cuyahoga Community College (49), Daemen (58), D'Youville College (88) and Hilbert College (137) rounded out the field. Ronni Kordrupel of Buffalo State placed first among the 46 runners with a time of 20:29.
Daemen was paced by sophomore Savannah Warner (Elma, N.Y.), who placed third overall for the second-straight year with a time of 21:40. Freshmen Sarah Golas (Alden, N.Y.) and Ryan James (Buffalo, N.Y.) both registered a top-10 finish in their collegiate debut. Golas placed fifth with a time of 22:08, while James came in ninth (22:54).
Sophomore Ashley Dusza (Alden, N.Y.) and freshman Mia Picciano (Auburn, N.Y.) rounded out the Daemen scorers today. Dusza finished 19th (24:50), while Picciano placed 22nd in her collegiate debut (25:50).
The Wildcats also sent sophomore Taya Mucha (Lockport, N.Y.) and junior Shania LiVecchi (West Seneca, N.Y.) to the starting line today. Mucha placed 26th with a time of 26:33, while LiVecchi finished 32nd (27:58).
Daemen is idle until Sept. 15 when it takes part in the Yellow Jacket Invitational hosted by the University of Rochester.
