ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Daemen College women's cross country team took part in the Harry F. Anderson Invitational on the campus of Roberts Wesleyan College today. The Wildcats placed 13th out of 18 schools.
Host Roberts Wesleyan cruised the team title, as the Redhawks placed five runners among the top15 finishers and totaled 40 points. SUNY Geneseo, which is ranked third nationally among Division III teams, placed second (87), while Mercyhurst University (115), St. Bonaventure University (130) and Gannon University (137) rounded out the top five. The Wildcats totaled 368 points and placed fifth among the five NCAA Division II schools entered today behind RWC, Mercyhurst, Gannon, and St. Thomas Aquinas College (234). RWC entered the event ranked fourth in the latest U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division II East Region poll, while STAC was ranked 10th.
Sophomore Ashley Watson of RWC took home the individual champion honors, as she completed the 5,000-meter race in a time of 18:29.4. She edged out her teammate Brittany Shumway (18:30.7) by just one second.
Daemen was paced by sophomore Savannah Warner (Elma, N.Y.) for the third-straight race this season. Warner placed 47th among the 243 entrants with a time of 20:08.6, which ranks as the second fastest time for Warner in a 5K event over her brief two-year career. Freshmen Sarah Golas (Alden, N.Y.) continued her solid rookie season, as she placed 81st with a time of 20:43.2. Golas knocked 1:25 off her previous personal-best time for a 5K race (22:08), which she posted in the season-opening Daniel Walker Invitational. Redshirt freshman Kassandra Nolet (Fort Erie, Ontario) also finished among the top-100 runners, as she placed 92nd with a time of 20:57.9.
Sophomore Ashley Dusza (Alden, N.Y.) and freshman Ryan James (Buffalo, N.Y.) rounded out the Daemen scorers today. Dusza turned in the second-best 5K effort of her two-year career and placed 126th with a time of 21:43.6. She knocked over three minutes off her season-opening time of 24:50 at the Daniel Walker Invitational. James was close behind Dusza and finished 130th with a time of 21:52.2. James also improved on her season-opening time of 22:54 at the Daniel Walker Invitational.
Sophomore Taya Mucha (Lockport, N.Y.), junior Shania LiVecchi (West Seneca, N.Y.) and freshman Mia Picciano (Auburn, N.Y.) also competed for the Wildcats. Mucha posted the third-best 5K time of her two-year career and placed 145th (22:15.2). LiVecchi knocked five minutes off her season-opening time at the Daniel Walker and finished 171st (22:54.2). Picciano also improved on her season-opening 5K time and placed 174th (23:05.3)
Daemen is idle until Oct. 6 when it takes part in the Highlander Invitational hosted by the Houghton College.
