HIGHLANDER INVITATIONAL  — FULL RESULTS

HOUGHTON, N.Y. - The Daemen College men's track and field team resumed its 2021-22 indoor season by taking part in the Highlander Invitational held today on the campus of Houghton College.

Top-10 finishes by sophomore Jon Moote (Wilson, N.Y.) in the mile run and classmate Connor O'Brien (Hamburg, N.Y.) in the 800 meters and a school-record effort in the 4x800 relay highlighted the track portion of the event for Daemen, while the field events saw senior Erik Matthews (Galway, N.Y.) post a top-10 effort in both the long jump and the triple jump.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Moote took part in the mile run for the first time in his brief career and placed third out of 67 runners with a time of 4:36.19. A standout on the Daemen cross country team this past fall, Moote's time today ranks as the fourth fastest time in the mile in program history. Moote came just four seconds shy of the school record time of 4:32.62 set by Jeremy Rushok at the 2014 Golden Eagle Invite.
  • O'Brien placed seventh out of 35 runners in the 800 meters with a time of 2:07.52. His time ranks as the seventh fastest time in the 800 meters in program history—11 seconds off the record (1:56.98) set by Matt VanDeMortel at the 2017 Robert J. Kane Invitational.
  • Junior John Bruggman (Batavia, N.Y.), freshman Nolan Robillard (Hamburg, N.Y.) and sophomore Laertes Cushing (Alfred, N.Y.) also took part in the 800 meters. Bruggman placed 17th (2:11.62), Robillard finished 24th with a personal best time (2:15.80) and Cushing ran the 800 for the first time in his career and placed 29th (2:21.32).
  • Matthews, who set the school record for the 60 meter hurdles (8.92) last month during the Houghton Indoor Meet, placed third in that event today with a time of 9.16. He went on to place seventh in the long jump (6.12 meters) and fifth in the triple jump (11.88 meters).
  • The 200 meters saw senior Zach Brainard (Lancaster, N.Y.) and sophomore Tyrell Whitaker (Lancaster, N.Y.) post personal best times. Brainard placed 21st out of 42 runners with a time of 24.77, while Whitaker placed 29th (25.20).
  • Sophomore Hessen Bahgat (Fredonia, N.Y.) and freshman Jake Elias (Depew, N.Y.) also posted top-10 efforts today. Bahgat placed sixth out of 14 athletes in the pole vault with a score of 3.65 meters—which ranks as the third best effort in that event in program history. Elias competed in the shot put and weight throw. He placed ninth in the weight throw with a personal best toss of 10.70 meters and placed 15th in the shot put (10.31 meters).
  • The Daemen 4x800 relay team of Bruggman, Moote, O'Brien and sophomore Phil Ceccarelli (Hamburg, N.Y.) placed fourth among 12 teams with a time school-record time of 8:53.83—eclipsing the previous mark of 8:59.20 set at the 2016 Robert J. Kane Invitational.
