EAST COAST CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS -- FULL RESULTS

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - The Daemen College men's track and field team placed eighth out of nine teams at the 2022 East Coast Conference Indoor Championships held today at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Staten Island, N.Y.

Georgian Court University accumulated 174 points and cruised to its third-straight conference championship. Roberts Wesleyan College (88), Holy Family University (85), St. Thomas Aquinas College (78) and Molloy College (48) rounded out the top five. Daemen finish with 17 points.

The Daemen men entered the event ranked 16th in the most recent regional merit rating index for the 2021-22 season published by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

A second place showing by sophomore Jon Moote (Wilson, N.Y.) in the mile highlighted the day for Daemen.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Moote registered a personal best time of 4:34.43 en route to his second place showing in the mile—eclipsing his previous best of time of 4:35.16 that he posted at the Brockport Multi three weeks ago. His time of 4:34.43 today also ranks as the fourth fastest mile time in program history, just two seconds behind the school record of 4:32.2 set by Jeremy Rushok at the 2014 Golden Eagle Invite.
  • Moote also ran the 3,000 meters and placed eighth out of 20 runners with a time of 9:10.32. Moote set a new school record for the 3,000 meters (9:05.55) earlier this year at the Robert J. Kane Invitational—eclipsing the previous record of 9:09.56 set by Lucas Canales at the 2018 Highlander Invitational. Moote posted a top-five finish in five of the seven events he ran this season.
  • Daemen also got top-ten efforts from senior Erik Matthews (Galway, N.Y.), junior Dominic Clementi (Barker, N.Y.) and sophomores Phil Ceccarelli (Hamburg, N.Y), Connor O'Brien (Hamburg, N.Y.) and David Schwinger (Buffalo, N.Y.) this afternoon.
  • Matthews placed eighth and equaled his personal best time in the 400 meters (52.52). That time also ranks the fastest time in the 400 by a Daemen runner this season. Matthews also competed in the 60 meter high hurdles and the long jump today.
  • Clementi placed fifth out of 12 runners in the 800 meters with a time of 2:00.55.
  • Ceccarelli placed seventh in the 500 meters with a personal best time of 1:10.46, while O'Brien finished seventh in the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:48.68.
  • Schwinger took part in the 5,000 meters and placed ninth with a personal best time of 17:50.76.
  • Sophomores Steven Blatto (Lancaster, N.Y.) and Tyrell Whitaker (Lancaster, N.Y.) and freshmen Nolan Robillard (Hamburg, N.Y.) and Hayden Grover (Alden, N.Y.) all posted personal best times today. Blatto in the 3,000 meters (9:57.67), Whitaker in the 400 meters (55.08), Robillard in the 500 meters (1:14.42) and Grover in the 60 meter high hurdles (10.22).

He also placed 11th in the weight throw (10.92 meters). Sophomore Jake Carroll (Rochester, N.Y.) also took part in the shot put (10.82 meters) and weight throw (10.31 meters) and placed 11th and 13th respectively.
  • Daemen's 4x400 meter relay team of Ceccarelli, Clementi, Matthews and senior Zach Brainard (Lancaster, N.Y.) placed fourth out of nine teams with a time of 3:32.79.
  • Matthews was awarded the Elite 19 Award for men's indoor track & field. The ECC announced the creation of the Elite 19 award in 2017, which is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade point average competing in each of the ECC's 19 championships.
