UB INVITATIONAL — FULL RESULTS

AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen University men's track and field team placed second out of five teams at the University at Buffalo Invitational today. The event took place on the UB campus.

The host UB Bulls posted 274 points to claim the team title, while Daemen (128) finished ahead of SUNY Fredonia (67), Canisius College (41) and St. Bonaventure University (18).

A school record effort by senior Erik Matthews (Galway, N.Y.) in the 400 meter hurdles highlighted the day for the Wildcats.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Matthews posted a school record for the second time this spring, as he placed first among two entrants in the 400 meter hurdles with a program record time of 56.43 seconds. His time today broke the program record of 57.25 that Matthews set last spring at the East Coast Conference Outdoor Championships. Matthews, who posted a time of 57.48 in this event earlier this year at the Geneseo Early Season Invitational, now owns the top seven times in program history for the 400 meter hurdles.
  • Matthews also took part in the 110 meter hurdles and the long jump today. He placed second out of three entrants in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 16.50 seconds, which ranks as the third fastest time in program history. He set the program record of 16.09 seconds at the Geneseo Early Season Invitational earlier this year. Matthews finished second out of six entrants in the long jump with a personal best leap of 6.51 meters, which ranks as the fifth best effort in program history.
  • Daemen had four entrants in the 800 meters. Junior Dominic Clementi (Barker, N.Y.) placed first among Daemen runners and seventh out 28 runners overall with a personal best time of 1:57.93—eclipsing his previous best time of 1:58.77 that he posted at the 2021 UB Invitational. It also ranks as the seventh fastest time in program history for the 800 meters at an outdoor event. Sophomore Phil Ceccarelli (Hamburg, N.Y) placed 17th in the 800 meters with a personal best time of 2:03.32, while junior John Bruggman (Batavia, N.Y.) placed 18th (2:03.53). Freshman Nolan Robillard (Hamburg, N.Y.) also took part in the 800 meters and placed 22nd with a personal best time of 2:06.18.
  • Sophomore Steven Blatto (Lancaster, N.Y.) placed first among Daemen runners and 16th overall in the 5,000 meters with a personal best time of 16:57.61. Sophomore David Schwinger (Buffalo, N.Y.) also posted a personal best time in the 5,000 (17:28.87) and placed 19th, while senior Alexander Reynolds (Olean, N.Y.) placed 22nd (18:23.32). Sophomore Jon Moote (Wilson, N.Y.), who posted a time of 15:32.28 in the 5,000 meters earlier this year, started today's race but was unable to finish.
  • Sophomore Connor O'Brien (Hamburg, N.Y.) competed in the 3,000 meter steeplechase and placed second out of three entrants with a personal time of 10:19.73, which also ranks as the second fastest time in that event in program history—just eight seconds shy of the program record (10:11.34) set by Kevin Roginson in 2016.
  • Senior Zach Brainard (Lancaster, N.Y.) competed in the 100 and 200 meter dash and set a personal best time in both events. He placed ninth out of 16 sprinters in the 100 meters (11.65 seconds) and 11th out of 19 sprinters in the 200 meters (23.66 seconds).
  • Freshman Hayden Grover (Alden, N.Y.) took part three events today and posted a personal best effort in all three. He ran the 110 meter hurdles and placed third (19.48), ran the 200 meter dash and placed 18th (25.75) and took part in the long jump and placed fifth (5.21 meters).
  • Freshman Jake Elias (Depew, N.Y.) was the top Daemen finisher in the shot put, discus throw, hammer throw and javelin. Elias placed sixth in the shot put (10.63 meters), third in the discus (32.26 meters), third in the hammer (28.50 meters) and fourth in the javelin (39.42 meters). His efforts in the discus and hammer were personal bests.
