EAST COAST CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS — FULL RESULTS
ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Daemen University men's track and field team placed fourth out of five teams at the 2022 East Coast Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships held today on the campus of Roberts Wesleyan College.
St. Thomas Aquinas College posted 228 points to claim its fourth title in the past five years. Roberts Wesleyan (186) placed second, followed by Molloy College (98), Daemen (76) and Queens (52).
Senior Erik Matthews (Galway, N.Y.) enjoyed an outstanding day, as he posted a top three finish in three events—including a first place showing and a school record in the 400 meter hurdles. Junior Dominic Clementi (Barker, N.Y.) also posted a school record and placed third overall in the 1,500 meters. The afternoon also featured a second place effort by senior Henry Moffitt (Sydney, Australia) in the triple jump and high jump.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Matthews began his day by defending his ECC title in the 400 meter hurdles, as he placed first out of 12 entrants with a school record time of 56.08 seconds—eclipsing the school record (56.43) he set earlier this season at the University at Buffalo Invitational. Matthews would then place second in the 110 meter hurdles—an event he won last spring—with a time of 16.31 seconds. It ranks as the third fastest time in program history at an outdoor event. Matthews now owns the top nine times in program history for the 110 meter hurdles and the top nine times in program history for the 400 meter hurdles.
- Matthews capped his day by finishing third out the 12 entrants in the long jump with a leap of 6.25 meters.
- Clementi was the lone Daemen entrant in the 1,500 meter run and he placed third out of 16 runners with a school record time of 4:05.40—eclipsing the previous standard of 4:06.54 he set last week at the University of Rochester Alumni Invitational. It marked just the third time in Clementi's collegiate career that he has run the 1,500 meters. He first ran it at the Geneseo Early Season Invitational this past April and posted a time of 4:14.35. Clementi also took part in the 800 meters and placed ninth (2:07.39).
- Sophomore Jon Moote (Wilson, N.Y.) ran the 10,000 meters for the first time in his brief collegiate career and placed fifth out of nine runners with a time of 34:13.57. Sophomores Steven Blatto (Lancaster, N.Y.) and David Schwinger (Buffalo, N.Y.) also ran the 10,000 meters and both posted personal best times of 35:25.42 and 36:41.46 respectively.
- Sophomore Phil Ceccarelli (Hamburg, N.Y.) placed sixth in the 400 meters with a personal best time of 52.84 seconds.
- Senior Zach Brainard (Lancaster, N.Y.), sophomore Tyrell Whitaker (Lancaster, N.Y.) and freshman Hayden Grover (Alden, N.Y.) all competed in the 200 meter dash and all three posted a personal best time. Brainard placed 11th (23.29), Whitaker placed 14th (23.97) and Grover finished 23rd (25.43).
- Freshman John Balch (Saranac, N.Y.) was the top Daemen finisher in the 5,000 meters, as he placed 11th with a time of 17:47.37.
- Moffitt, the defending champion in the triple jump, took part in the high jump, triple jump and the long jump and placed second in both the high jump (1.78 meters) and triple jump (12.31 meters). He would also place sixth in the long jump with a leap of 6.02 meters.
- Freshman Jake Elias (Depew, N.Y.) was the top Daemen finisher in the javelin, hammer and discus. He posted a personal best throw of 44.35 meters and placed fifth out of 20 entrants in the javelin and also posted a personal best effort and placed sixth in the hammer (32.37 meters). He would also post a top ten effort in the shot put (10.81 meters).
- Sophomore Jake Carroll (Rochester, N.Y.) recorded personal best efforts in the shot put and hammer. He placed first among Daemen entrants and seventh overall in the shot put (11.32 meters) and placed seventh in the hammer (31.16 meters).
- Sophomore Hessen Bahgat (Fredonia, N.Y.) earned six points with a third place showing in the pole vault (2.80 meters) and also posted a personal best effort in the shot put (10.60 meters).
- Daemen's 4x400 relay team of Brainard, Ceccarelli, Matthews and Clementi posted a time of 3:30.19, which ranks as the third fastest time in program history.
- Daemen's 4x800 relay team of junior John Bruggman (Batavia, N.Y.) Moote, Blatto and freshman Nolan Robillard (Hamburg, N.Y.) placed second out of six teams with a time of 8:33.19, which ranks as the fifth fastest time in program history.
