The Wildcats will play at Nazareth on Thursday (Sept. 28) and then play at Division I Niagara on Saturday (Oct. 30). THE WILDCATS Daemen played its first dual match of the year last Wednesday, suffering a 5-4 loss at RIT. The Wildcats dropped to 0-2 following a 5-2 loss at Millersville on Sunday. Head coach Richard Greco returns five players from last year's team and welcomes two newcomers to the 2023-24 roster. Sophomore Alex Lumanog (Albuquerque, N.M.) played No. 1 singles as a freshman last year. Graduate student Zachary Laplante (Ottawa, Ontario) posted a team-high 11 singles wins last year (11-8), while sophomore Rohan Chitanand (Den Haag, Nethewrlands) and fifth-year senior Luis de Vuyst (Antwerp, Belgium) both finished with five singles wins. Newcomers Juan Alvarez (Puebla, Mexico) and Lasse Mergens (Bochum, Germany) are both expected to make immediate contributions. Alvarez played the last two seasons at Emory & Henry College. Mergens, a freshman, trained with TC Bochum in Germany prior to enrolling at Daemen. THE GOLDEN FLYERS Nazareth is a NCAA Division III member of the Empire 8 Conference. The Golden Flyers (0-2, 0-0 E8) opened the 2023-24 season with losses to Oswego State (4-5) and Penn State Behrend (3-6). Nazareth went 11-5 overall (8-2 Empire 8) last year and lost to Houghton in the championship match of the Empire 8 Tournament. All-conference selections Pierre Ntonga and Dominic Vito return to the lineup this season. Ntonga went 11-5 in singles play last year, while Vito went 6-7. SERIES HISTORY Thursday's match will mark the first ever meeting between the Wildcats and the Golden Flyers. THE PURPLE EAGLES Niagara is a NCAA Division I member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). The Purple Eagles will be playing their first dual match of the 2023-24 season Saturday. Niagara went 6-12 overall and 3-3 in the MAAC last year. Junior Tanner Bedard returns after going 10-7 in singles action last year. SERIES HISTORY Saturday's match will mark the 10th all-time meeting between the two schools. Niagara has prevailed in the previous nine meetings, including a pair of 7-0 wins last year. UP NEXT Daemen is idle until Oct. 11 when it closes out the fall portion of its 2023-24 schedule with a match at Allegheny College.
