AMHERST, N.Y. – The Daemen University women's tennis team swept the East Coast Conference women's tennis weekly awards as senior
Kitsa Scime (Williamsville, N.Y.) was named the ECC Player of the Week while freshman
Bella Bjerkan (Elmhurst, Ill.) was tabbed the circuits rookie of the week, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon.
It marks the fifth time that Scime has earned a weekly honor in her career while this is the first weekly award for Bjerkan.
Scime went a perfect 4-0 for the weekend, going 2-0 at both singles and doubles. The Daemen senior did not drop a single set against Arija Grant of Houghton University at No. 1 singles, winning 6-0, 6-0. She went on to defeat Allegheny College's Julia Muessler at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-0. Scime won 6-2 against Houghton on No. 1 doubles and 7-6 (7-3) at No. 2 doubles against Allegheny with partner
Yinett Del Leon (Cape Coral, Fla.).
A 2023 ECC First Team All-Conference honoree, Scime currently has 40 career singles wins and sits 10 away from breaking the program record of 49 set by Christina Stasiuk.
As for Bjerkan, she began her collegiate career 4-0, also going 2-0 at both singles and doubles. In her first collegiate doubles match against Houghton, she won at No. 3 doubles, 6-1, and in her first collegiate singles match, won 6-0, 6-3, against Zoe Zachery. In her second collegiate match against Allegheny, Bjerkan won at No. 1 doubles, 7-5, and at No. 5 singles, 6-4, 6-2, against Omega Ba.
Bjerkan is the first member of the Wildcats to be named the league's rookie of the week since
Maya Chon earned the award last September.
Daemen also had Del Leon and freshman
Stephanie Baier (Boise, Idaho) tabbed to the ECC Weekly Honor Roll. Both Del Leon and Baier went 2-0 on singles and 2-0 on doubles over the weekend, playing in both matches.
The Wildcats record stands at 2-0 overall after the first weekend of play with their next match today at 4 p.m. on the road at Nazareth University before they head north to Lewiston, N.Y., to face Niagara University on Sept. 14 at 11 a.m.
