ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Sophomore
Sam Rugg (Freeville, N.Y./Dryden) took top honors in the long jump competition today to pace the Daemen College men's track and field team at University of Rochester Spring Invitational - the squad's inaugural event of the 2013 outdoor season - held at Edwin Fauver Stadium.
Rugg's leap of 6.20 meters won the event, besting a 14-participant field. Teammate
Hunter Berry (Colden, N.Y./Springville-Griffith) took sixth with a jump of 5.93 meters.
Also fairing well in field events was senior thrower
Mark Fox (Dansville, N.Y./Dansville). Fox took fifth in the shot put with a toss of 13.17 meters. Teammate
Brandon D'Amato (N. Tonawanda, N.Y./N. Tonawanda) brought home a 10th place finish in the event as well (12.20 meters).
Fox added a throw of 36.85 meters in the discus to take sixth place in that event as well.
Freshman
Robert Ralyea (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport), fresh off his win at the East Coast Conference Indoor Championships last month, took sixth in the pole vault competition after clearing a height of 3.61 meters.
On the track, fifth-year senior
Brett Smith (Ontario, N.Y./Wayne Central) paced Daemen with a fourth place finish in the 5000 meter run. Smith ran the longest race of the day in 16:25.86 and narrowly missed out on a top-three finish (third place went to Brockport's Greg Dziuba at 16:24.23).
Sophomore
Zac Ekdahl (Middlesex, N.Y./Marcus Whitman) came through with a 10th place finish in the 800 meter run (2:10.06) while Rugg added a 10th place finish in the 200 meter dash (23.72 seconds) to his impressive day.
The Wildcats' outdoor season continues next Saturday when they'll be back in Rochester for the Roc City Classic hosted by Nazareth College.
