FULL RESULTS
FLUSHING, N.Y. - The Daemen College men's track and field team saw their 2012-13 season come to an end today as they completed day two of the East Coast Conference (ECC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships, finishing in fifth place in the overall team standings.
Queens College (165 points) edged out second-place St. Thomas Aquinas College (164 points) by the slimmest of margins to take the conference crown.
Daemen got a runner-up finishes from a trio of athletes today, led by senior thrower
Mark Fox (Dansville, N.Y./Dansville). Fox's toss of 13.90 meters in the shot put was good for second place. It was Fox's fourth top-five finish in the event during the spring outdoor season and it followed his runner-up finish in the same event at February's ECC Indoor Track and Field Championships for which he earned 1st Team All-Conference honors.
Fox's effort in the shot put earned eight points for Daemen while he also added a fifth place finish, and the accompanying two team points, in the discus with a throw of 37.78 meters.
Joining Fox with second place showings was senior
Andrew Stapleton (Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) and sophomore
Sam Rugg (Freeville, N.Y./Dryden). Stapleton cleared 3.05 meters in the pole vault finals to earn his runner-up finish while Rugg's signature moment came in the long jump with a leap of 6.37 meters.
Freshman
Sean O'Brien (Dansville, N.Y./Dansville) earned a fifth place finish in the hammer throw (24.00 meters) to earn two team points.
Rugg added a sixth-place showing in the 200 meter dash with a time of 23.61 seconds. That finish was matched by sophomore
Zac Ekdahl (Middlesex, N.Y./Marcus Whitman) in the 800 meter run (1:59.91) and classmate
Zach Eustance (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) in the 5000 meter run (16:34.13) and also by freshman
Brandon D'Amato (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) in the shot put (11.75 meters).
The event this weekend brings to a close this historic season for Daemen. Coach
Jessica Gorski's squad competed during the indoor season this past winter for the first time ever after indoor track and field was officially added to Daemen's growing stable of intercollegiate athletic teams for the 2012-13 academic year, while also becoming the first Daemen team to compete within the ECC, which all of Daemen's teams will join in 2013-14 as part of the College's transition to NCAA Division II.
