Daemen Treks To DC Metro Area This Weekend

THE LEAD
The Daemen College men's soccer team hits the road for the second consecutive weekend, this time heading to the Washington, D.C. metro area for a non-league contest with Washington Adventist University and a league bout with University of the District of Columbia.

ON THE SIDELINES
Daemen: Bobby McColl enters his first season at the helm for Daemen after spending the last three seasons as the Head Women's Soccer Coach at Roberts Wesleyan College...McColl's tenure at Roberts Wesleyan notably came during that program's ascent to the NCAA Division II level of competition, compiling a 35-20-5 record in that span, including a 12-5-3 mark last season in which McColl led the Redhawks to an apparance in the East Coast Conference Tournament finals and at-large berth in the NCAA Division II National Championships....prior to his time in Rochester, McColl served for one season as the Head Men's Soccer Coach at Greenville College (Ill.), leading that NCAA Division III program to a 10-6-3 mark and a second-place finish in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference...a native of Glasgow, Scotland, McColl came stateside to compete collegiately, playing three season at Union University (Tenn.) before finishing his career at Trinity International University (Ill.).
   
DAEMEN SCOUTING REPORT (1-10-0, 0-5-0 ECC)
Daemen returns 13 players from last year's team that finished 2-13-1 overall and 0-9-1 in the East Coast Conference…first-year head coach Bobby McColl returns the team's top two scorers and starting goalkeeper from last year...…sophomore Kyle Tracy and senior Alex Reid shared the team lead in scoring last season, both posting 10 points....Tracy's point total came on his team-leading five goals...Reid has scored 13 goals in his career and totaled 33 points heading into his final season for the Wildcats...sophomore net-minder Justin Figler played every second of every game last season as a true freshman, finishing second in the ECC with 88 saves...also back is senior forward Cole Beale who notched a team-high five goals and 11 points in 2014…in the midfield, Daemen returns a pair of veterans in Nick Sammarco and Logan Podrebarac...Sammarco has made 34 starts in his career to date while Podrebarac started in 14 of his 15 appearances last season while posting five points...senior Austin Stephany returns to anchor the Wildcat defense...he's made 30 appearances in the last two seasons, including 29 starts, since transferring from Division I Buffalo...newcomers who are expected to make an immediate impact include senior forward Colin Edwards, a transfer from Tiffin University, and freshmen backs Kyle White and Joe Keem...Daemen was picked 10th in the 2016 ECC preseason poll...Daemen snapped an 11-game slide dating back to last season with a 1-0 win at D'Youville on Sept. 11...freshman forward Ali Shawish netted the first goal of his career which stood up as the game-winner...since then, Daemen has suffered six consecutive defeats and is coming off a 4-1 defeat to Roberts Wesleyan earlier this week...freshman back Connor Essenburg netted the first goal of his career in the loss...Shawish leads the Wildcats in points (6), shots (40) and shots on goal (14)...additional offensive production has come from Beale (2 gls, 1 ast, 5 pts, 21 shots) and Edwards (1 gl, 3 asts, 5 pts, 20 shots)...Figler has made nine starts between the pipes, and he ranks third among ECC goalkeepers with 38 total saves...he posted the second shutout of his career in the win over D'Youville.
   
WASHINGTON ADVENTIST SCOUTING REPORT (4-4-0)
Washington Adventist is a dual-member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA)...the Shock are led by fourth-year head coach Carlington Harvey who has posted a 24-29-3 record to date...WAU returns just five players from its 2015 team which achieved an overall record of 3-8-2...junior forward Kingley Nwosu is the team's top returning point-producer...Nwosu posted seven points (2 gls, 3 asts) last season to finish second on the team...also  back are senior defender Dominic Atabongakeng (2 gls, 1 ast) and junior midfielder Douglas Guevara (1 gl, 3 asts) who each registered five points in 2015...in goal, senior Windell Reid returns after making 12 starts last season while posting a 2.07 goals against average...after opening the season with back-to-back wins, the Shock are just 2-4 over their last six outings...their most recent win came on Sept. 24 over NAIA foe Fisher (2-1)...the Shock are coming off a 3-2 (2OT) loss to NCAA Division II Pitt-Johnstown earlier this week...freshman Elam Lemus has burst on the scene to lead the team in both goals (9) and points (19) thus far...he's been backed up offensively by Atabongakeng (3 gls, 2 asts, 8 pts)...Lemus notched a goal and an assist in the loss to Pitt-Johnstown, as did senior Abenezer Zewdie...in goal, Reid has split time with freshman Pedro Merino...Merino's 31 saves leads the team.

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA SCOUTING REPORT (2-8-1, 2-1-1 ECC)
UDC is led by sixth-year head coach Matthew L. Thompson who has helped the Firebirds to a 37-46-12 record in his tenure to date...Thompson's best season came in 2014 when the Firebirds went 9-7-1 overall and an even 5-5 in East Coast Conference play...UDC returns 13 players from its 2015 squad which went 5-11-1 overall and 3-7 in league games...leading the group of returners is senior defender/midfielder Victor Salinas Furio who was a third-team All-ECC selection last season after posting 10 points on four goals and a pair of assists...the Firebirds were picked eighth in the ECC preseason poll...UDC opened the 2016 season with five consecutive defeats before downing Bridgeport (1-0) in their ECC opener on Sept. 17...following a 2-1 (OT) loss at Gannon, the Firebirds struck paydirt again with a 3-1 conference win at Mercy on Sept. 24...UDC is 0-2-1 over their last three games, including a 3-0 home loss to Mercyhurst in their last outing (Oct. 5)...offensive production has been a struggle for the Firebirds this season as they rank eighth in the ECC in goals (10) and shot percentage (.067)...freshman Gabriel Torres has paced the Firebirds with three goals and two assists for a team-best eight points...sophomore Kevin Claure-Guzman (2 gls, 1 ast, 5 pts) is the only other player with multiple goals this season...returner Kevin Ortez netted the lone goal in UDC's win over Bridgeport...between the pipes, senior Ever Guevara Alvarez and freshman Joao Brusamolin have split time thus far...Alvarez is 2-3-1 with the shutout vs. Bridgeport on his record while Brusamolin has posted an 0-4-0 record...Alvarez leads the team in saves (25), save percentage (.610) and goals against average (2.25).
